Hydrogen: Hydrogen will not start (windows 7 runtime error)

Ive tried every available version of Hydrogen on the site, and every single time i try to launch it i get "the application has requested the runtime to terminate" error.

Ive tried all compatibility modes, running as administrator, restarting my pc, updating Windows and all C++ libraries and still the same.

This looks like the same issue as #879 , which looks like it's an issue in PortAudio probably not coping with some devices.

What sort of sound hardware and drivers do you have in your system?

Wow, that's surprising. It's almost impossible to debug something like this without reproducing it. Would you mind helping out by running an instrumented version of Hydrogen (which I might be able to whip up over the weekend) that will output some more debug info to try and work out what's going on and how to work around it?

You can capture the debug output with:

"C:\Program Files\Hydrogen\hydrogen.exe" -V Debug > C:\debug.txt"

from a command prompt.

I got the same runtime error. Im a little confused about capturing the debug output commands though. I copy/paste each one without quotations and heres what it says:

Ah, sorry, I seem to have got an extra " at the end of that command line, but the whole command line was intended to be copied and pasted verbatim. If you start up the command prompt and copy-and-paste this:

"C:\Program Files\Hydrogen\hydrogen.exe" -V Debug > Desktop\debug.txt"

...it should crash just like before, but should create a 'debug.txt' on your desktop that you can open with Notepad and copy-and-paste.

So before you commented again i uninstalled and tried reintalling...now i just get error message after error message like this:

Possibly the previous install was done as administrator? You may need to run the installer as administrator again.

Great, thank you! So Similarly to #873 it's crashing at the very first PortAudio call so it didn't get as far as my debug output!

I've built a Hydrogen install with a build of the PortAudio DLL with debugging tracing enabled, if you'd be able to repeat the procedure with that, there's a decent chance we'll be able to find at least the right areas to focus on.

So, it looks like this is caused by PortAudio failing to handle unconnected pins in WDM-KS topology filters.

I might fix PortAudio later, but as far as Hydrogen's concerned, this API is almost certainly never used by Hydrogen so the right thing to do for the moment at least seems to be to disable it in the MXE build of PortAudio for the DLL that ships with the H2 installer.

Question for @mauser @theGreatWhiteShark @jeremyz et al: for Windows release builds, is the MXE environment built as part of that?

There are two options:

  1. add a patch in mxe_installer to patch mxe/src/portaudio.mk for when the MXE invironment is built, or
  2. import portaudio as a submodule of the hydrogen repo and build portaudio under hydrogen/windows as part of the regular Windows build process.

I'd hope that 1 is viable since it's a lot less work than 2. Thoughts? :)

The build environment is setup locally on my PC (and manually updated). In my opinion (1) would be the way to go.

I have to re-build the MXE environment on my PC due to other reasons before the 1.0 release, so i could change the portaudio makefile on this occasion.

No, it was very helpful! I had to re-install my local version of mxe, so i started again with a clean install which was build by the script. This was also a good opportunity to throw out some of the old stuff :) Thanks a lot for your work, Colin!

I've added a new version ""Hydrogen-1.0.0-rc1-2" some minutes ago, which should fix that problem as well. I'm not sure why i don't get those problems on my Windows 10 PC :frowning:
