Handbrake: Soft-burned subtitles

Created on 10 Jan 2020  路  5Comments  路  Source: HandBrake/HandBrake

Problem description:

When I import srt subtitles to my video using the latest version of HandBrake, selecting the default language to my foreign language, VLC or any other Windows video player is playing the video with the subtitle I selected as default. No problems so far.

_Example: I import Dutch, English and Spanish srt subtitles.
I select the Dutch subtitle as default and all subtitles are soft burned.
VLC is playing the video with Dutch subtitles as default, just as expected._

However, my 4K LG TV (+ latest updates) is not recognizing the default subtitle. It will play the English subtitle as default one while I selected the Dutch as default inside HandBrake. I am able to choose the Dutch subtitle manually but this one should be the default automatically.
I think this is a LG TV issue but I'm not sure about it. No log provided this time since since no actual errors. If you still need a log please let me know. The file(s) in question are around 1 to 2 GB.

HandBrake version

1.3.1

Operating system and version

Windows 7 x64

You are likely correct, unfortunately. Most devices do not honor the default flag as intended. I'm guessing the TV is defaulting to either the first track or the TV's menu language.

I have seen very few devices that honor the flags, and even VLC will ignore it on occasion. So the work-around is to list what you want as default as the first subtitle track defined. Even the non-compliant players seem to respect that.

Yup, My LG 4K 2017 model also has the same issue along with others.

  • Ignores the Default Flag.
  • Handles the Timestamps incorrectly, frequently pushing 1 subtitle above another that starts after the last and in some cases overlapping with multi-line subs.
  • Defaults to the wrong character set. They appear to be doing some kind of auto-detection and failing.
  • Doesn't handle bold / italics properly and potentially other formatting correctly. I'm guessing because they provide some override options, they ignore what's in the file.

Don't get me started about all the other bugs / issues the base software has

I haven't see any TV companies care about the software they put on their TV's so generally I've always recommended to get a box (AppleTV, Roku or whatever from someone who has a good track record of providing updates and feature improvements over time)

Don't think there is much we can do from our side on this one I'm afraid. The files all look correctly tagged and sensible players handle it correctly.

Thanks for the replies. I will try to contact LG about this, although I highly doubt it but maybe they will do something about it.

Vuurvlieg meet wall :)
