Handbrake: Feature Request - Option to Add "Name" into Audio and Subtitle Tracks

Any chance we could have a field in the GUI to add the "Name" of an output's individual audio and subtitle tracks?

Would love to negate the tedious task of editing all post-Handbrake outputs in either MKVToolNix or Subler/MP4Tools.

I see this is already possible in the Audio track section (in the Windows builds, at least), really looking forward to the Subtitles option as well.

If possible, it would also be great to be able to pass through track names from the original video. The tags are pretty standardized (in MKV, at least), so giving Handbrake the option to just copy the track name from the input file and apply it to the track in the output file would save some time and effort as well.

I'd like to add another voice to this request:

I constantly find the ability to name subtitle tracks sorely lacking in _Handbrake_. When I have multiple subtitle tracks (e.g., foreign dialogue only, all dialogue, all dialogue with SDH, etc.), it would be a great improvement (or "enhancement") to _Handbrake_ to be able to label them, instead of having to open the new video file afterwards in the Header Editor of _MKVToolNix GUI_.
I certainly don't claim to be a coder, but since this option is already available for audio tracks in the "Audio" tab of _Handbrake_'s GUI, would it not be relatively easy to apply the same or similar code to add the same option to the "Subtitles" tab?

Thank you for all the time and work you've put keep are putting into _Handbrake_. It's a wonderful tool!

I agree with all the suggestions above that a feature for handbrake to name and/or "passthru" subtitle tracks titles be added.

In the Audio section of handbrake, one is able to select a codec and designate either predesignated or Auto "passthru's" -- why can't a similar feature be added to handbrake for subtitle labels? Some .mkv or video files have pre-labeled subtitles (ex. English SDH, English SRT, etc.) and it would be nice to be able to let these subtitle labels "passthru" the video file being converted by handbrake.

Just discovered handbrake - excellent app. Shortly thereafter discovered the subtitle issue and was amazed that this was not standard in an app so rich in features. Can only have been a design oversight!

Renaming subtitle tracks is sorely needed. In the BD of the Werner Herzog documentary "Cave of Forgotten Dreams", an incredible presentaton of the prehistoric art in Chauvet Cave, France, the French subtitle track is labeled "English". It would be nice to rename it. I know about MKVToolNix, but have not explored it yet.

Looks like this option is available for both audio and video in the newest nightlies, so check it out. Still a WIP, but the fields are there and it's passing through so it'll only get better.
As a note though, subtitle language labels (English, French, Spanish, etc) are controlled by a different set of data than the metadata "title" that we're talking about here.

Thank you, secondsabre, but I don't understand. "WIP"? What's it mean? And your last sentence... what are you implying? Do you mean that subtitles cannot be renamed, even in the nightly builds?

Ah, WIP = work in progress.
The last bit is clarifying that subtitle "language" and subtitle "title" are two different things. Handbrake has always passed through the "language" flag (ex. English, French, Spanish), and there's no way to change it in there, as far as I know. You can edit the "title" to whatever you like (ex. "English", "Commentary", "Official Blu-Ray Subs") and that will show in most players in the subtitle selection menus, but it doesn't change the actual language the player assumes it's in.
If you're looking to change the language flag, your best option is to edit it using another tool (like MKVtoolnix) before running it through Handbrake.

Well, secondsabre, I don't understand. I don't know the difference between a "language" flag and a "title". I'm using HB to transcode a BD title to MKV. There is no menu in an MKV of course, so I don't know whether what you've written even applies to what I request.

In the MPV player application, each 'j' keypress steps to the 'next' subtitle stream. The 1st stream is English and MPV briefly shows the word, "English", and then English subtitles start appearing at the bottom of frames. The 2nd stream is French but MPV briefly shows the word, "English", and then French subtitles start appearing at the bottom of frames. I would like HB to fix-up the 2nd stream so that MPV briefly shows the word, "French".

The language flag conforms to ISO-639-2 (or -3, I forget). It identifies a known natural language.

The title is whatever you would like it to be. You could make this "English" or "Director's Commentary", it's arbitrary.

Anyway, as mentioned, this is implemented in the nightly build on all platforms except macOS.
