Habitica: Bailey's news messages not translatable. Maybe provide link to multilingual archive on Wiki?

Created on 8 Jun 2015  Â·  15Comments  Â·  Source: HabitRPG/habitica

Since translators currently don't have an opportunity to translate the news before they go live, may we have a link to the news archive on wiki in the news modal?

The way I see it:
POC

The Whats_New page on the wiki has news translated into several languages by wiki editors - and it's possible for a user to choose the language.

One downside to this is the possible inaccuracy of the news translations for some languages, but we run the same risk with in-game translations in general and we accept that risk.

I think this link will make the news more accessible to non-English speakers and so would be a good thing.

It may confuse players, though, into thinking that they will be able to see
the latest news in their language, which will not be true unless it has
already been translated.

I think it would still be a good idea to include the link. My impression is that our wiki translators are pretty fast when it comes to this.

I'd really like to bring this issue back up with the last announcement about the maintenance.

I guess translators could have had a note at least a couple of hours before the announcement goes online, if it's possible... Even with news being untranslatable at least they could have prepared themselves to be ready to post in language-specific guilds to prevent confusion, possible misunderstanding and frustration among those who might not feel quite confident reading and understanding English text...

I agree that not all language teams are active enough to translate the news just in time, but having such opportunity might give valuable incentives, e.g. to Linguistic Scribes, I believe.

Oops, that's just me who've missed the preliminary notice in the Aspiring Socialites guild due to being at work. I'm really sorry

_Added later:_
For possible own reference translation of the maintenance page and hours it took translators to get down to business and translate it - while the actual translation time can be: from about 45 minutes for quick translation - to about 2,3 hours for quality translation)

  • [x] English UK (23 hours)
  • [x] French (19,5 hours)
  • [x] German (24,5 hours)

_Added much later:_
About 10 hours after the update of files on Transifex: I wish I had the idea of creating an announcement on Transifex much earlier :-( Still I guess better late than never. We'll see if it may be of any help. https://www.transifex.com/habitrpg/habitrpg/announcements/5706/ So considering the times mentioned above a lag of 10 hours between the update of files and special announcement should be taken into account. Other language teams finishing after about 30 hours after the update are not mentioned.

I'm afraid my message might have sounded ignorant or even disrespectful, although I haven't meant it like that. Ordinary users can only imagine how much effort this massive project has taken and I personally admire the team's commitment to finish it respecting deadlines. I do understand that translations issues are of lower priority than other general development tasks, especially the ones included in the milestones. So my message was only about future possibilities and I felt the need to comment thinking about the users' experience - wishing to make it a bit more flawless. And nothing else, no other intentions. Thank you for everything you do to bring us the joy of Habitica!

It didn't come across that way at all.

@crookedneighbor thank you very much for your comment! I do appreciate that! sigh of relief

BTW, 24 hours after the update on Transifex and 6 language have maintenance.json translated. If you have a minute, could you please update locales, if it's possible before the migration?

Good idea. Will try.

Suggestion: add [translations] label.

If the idea is to add a link to the translated news, I can do that!

@MathWhiz Yes, please add the link as shown in the screenshot in the top post. The link should point to http://habitica.wikia.com/wiki/Whats_New (not http://habitica.wikia.com/wiki/Whats_New_2016 - the undated Whats_New URL will always point to the current year, so it's the best one to use). Ping me when you're done and I'll review it.

This should probably be reopened.

I have the fix ready, I just need to take a pic (on mobile 'till Sunday)

Slight problem: The new-stuff page is precompiled, meaning that it is unable to translate a link. Suggestions on how to continue?

@MathWhiz maybe add the link to the footer (to the left from and above the buttons) of https://github.com/HabitRPG/habitica/blob/develop/website/views/shared/modals/new-stuff.jade ? I guess it will look a bit worse, but with this way greater changes can be avoided...
