I get a dependencies missing error when trying to install on Debian Stretch with Gnome Shell v3.22.3. All dependencies listed in the read me are already installed and are the latest version.
I have the same issue on ubuntu 17.04. Specifically the extension complains about
gir1.2-gtop-2.0 gir1.2-networkmanager-1.0 but both are installed.
This is the log output from the installation to the "issing dependecies" prompt:

@iahvector and @stepps what version of the extension are you running? Can you check that there are no updates available?
I'm running this just fine on Debian Stretch and Ubuntu 17.10.
Same Issue here with Gnome version 3.24 and extension version 32
I maintain the packaged version in Debian, which seems to be working for me. Would you mind removing the system monitor extension, install the package gnome-shell-extension-system-monitor, restart gnome shell and try enabling it again? That works for me, perhaps it will for you too. I maintain that package in Debian so if you have problems with that too, then I can perhaps dig a bit deeper on that.
Maybe this helps: I had to reboot my Ubuntu 17.10 box to get the applet notice the dependencies were installed. (Maybe logging out and in again would have been sufficient.)
@highvoltage thank you, your approach worked for me.
@highvoltage Just to inform for testing (buster) debain: only apt install gtop-2.0 is needed.
Networkmanager library is updated with Gnome 3.28 and downgrading will remove Gnome Shell
It eventually ditched Ubuntu for Arch (again). I haven't had any issue since and I really like this extension
I've just upgraded to buster and have the dependencies problem. apt-get install gtop-2.0 doesn't work for me. I have gir1.2-gtop-2.0 and libgtop-2.0 installed at the up-to-date version.
This works for Debain 10
apt install gir1.2-gtop-2.0 gir1.2-nm-1.0 gir1.2-clutter-1.0

Still doesn't work here:
Debian Release: 10.0
gir1.2-clutter-1.0 is already the newest version (1.26.2+dfsg-10).
gir1.2-gtop-2.0 is already the newest version (2.38.0-4).
gir1.2-nm-1.0 is already the newest version (1.14.6-2).

GNOME Shell 3.30.2
Have you installed it from Gnome Extension manager from Firefox or Chrome?

I don't remember, but I don't think so.
I used it for years without problems on Debian stable. Some time ago (a
year or so) I needed a program from testing so I made an upgrade of the
whole system. This caused several problems, in particulat it broke the
monitor applet.
okay. Try this:
apt install chrome-gnome-shell
The open up firefox
install this addon:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/gnome-shell-integration/
enable it
Then Go to
https://extensions.gnome.org/local/
Uninstall system monitor and reinstall it.
You have local caches from Debain Stable which is conflicting your gnome shell.
You should update all the extensions from this firefox page.
The green gear means it needs updates
Also, if you have enabled some extensions and have not updated it yet after dist-upgrade , you are actually giving GNOME hard time managing your memory. And hence your PC performance will be reduced drastically.

After update I get again missing dependency error saying that for Ubuntu
one should install in particular gir1.2-networkmanager-1.0. It is not
avalable neither in Debian testing nor in unstable. looks like I have to
switch to another system monitor...

Despite the confusing message it seems to work after rebooting.
Thank you very much for your help!

@jsbien you should update all other extensions you have as well. Or else Gnome will be affected with performance reduction.
