The solution is to mark the "User" field on your "Contact" entity as @JsonIgnore.
I'm not sure this should be there as default, so I'm putting this "on hold":
- There is an easy workaround
- We need time to think about this

The "User" field marks as @JsonIgnore will have no error but the contacts table shows result without User.

Maybe Jackson's annotations @JsonBackReference or @JsonManagedReference could help here.

The login is null so it fails on login.toLowerCase(Locale.ENGLISH); in the setter ?

No, the commit I mentioned is not related with this issue.
the login in the indexed json is null so it fails during deserialization while calling setLogin().

this is due that ContactDTO contains just userId and userFirstName (as User information).
(note : _normally with the entity generator, the login is used instead of the firstName for the otherEntityField_)
During index creation : All the other data from the linked User are null (like the login).
Which means we can't search on those members (or throw exception because login is not supposed to be null for deserialization...)

This is a specific problem in using an entity with a DTO. Short answer is that it doesn't work out of the box.
For me #5227 is the same problem, but at a broader scale (as this is true for all entities, not just the user). So I'm closing this in favor of #5227

In fact I'm lost here... I just did one DTO with a many-to-one to User, and it worked without any issue! That's quite logical as there is a UserDTO... I'm sorry but it's quite hard to read your ticket, as it's not well formatted.
