Gb-studio: Are enemies or a combat system coming?

I find it weird there is currently no way to add enemy sprites to the game, or any means of fighting them. I also find it weird I'm the first person to ask about this.

I did have a some very early versions of the engine with an RPG battle system, but have put this to this side for the moment while we concentrate on making the scripting better as Thomas says. Ideally we can get to the point where implementing your own battle system would be possible in engine allowing it to be flexible.

My initial setup allowed battles with either a single 64px sprite (for bosses) or between one and three 32px sprites (for normal enemies). Adding this back in probably won't be too hard but currently everyone who's asked has wanted a different style of combat, Zelda, FF/DQ style, Shooter I'm not sure just yet if it will be possible to please everyone.

It's something we're thinking about though, yes we would like to solve it, but this is just the first release so bear with us.

Screenshots of my old battle system attached for reference.

You should be able to customize a sprite to deal damage to a player and such, though if you're talking about a generic RPG battle screen, (as in Pokemon and other games) then yeah, I do agree that there needs to be a more fleshed-out and customizable combat system.

You are not the first one to ask about it.
It is fully possible to add custom sprites to the game.
It is fully possible to create a form of battle system using triggers and events. You just have to be a little bit creative.

I do agree that a generic RPG battle screen would be nice. But one size doesn't alway fit everyone. The most important thing is to add tooling to GB Studio so we are able to implement custom behaviour like this using scripts.

Chris, Thomas,

I was hoping for something a little simpler. I'd envisioned something similar to Zelda Links Awakening, where the player can hold a shield and sword and swipe away at enemy sprites.

Is that similar to what you used to have?

this kind of BS looks awesome! I think that is potentially way more interesting than classic FF/Pok茅mon style
