Gadgetbridge: Free money

Hi,

I would like to support your project by giving you money. For free. I tried your Leberapay-page but it says you haven't setup your payment correctly. Can I send you guys money through PayPal for instance?

Best regards,
Pieter Hensen

I doubt a privacy-focused project like Gadgetbridge will use PayPal. What you describe about the Liberapay account is an issue many of us privacy-focused folks currently have: since Mangopay kicked them out, they no longer offer direct bank transfer for withdrawal, leaving PayPal and Stripe as only options – which we for privacy reasons cannot accept (a real pity and not Liberapay's fault; though I'd wish they'd rise the priority of this; unfortunately in their eyes this is not a big issue).

To find a way: what privacy friendly options would you be open to? Maybe we can find a way that works for both sides. For my projects I e.g. accept Bitcoin and direct bank transfers.

@ashimokawa @cpfeiffer @danielegobbetti with LP currently "dead in the tracks", it would be a good idea to have some alternatives indeed. Which ones would you be open for? Your opinion on Stripe would be interesting to me as well (see above, same issue for me). Guess we don't need to talk about PayPal as we know our positions on that 🤣

If I may offer an alternative, I would like to recommend the cryptocurrency Monero. Bitcoin is not actually private, and quite traceable due to its transparent nature.

I too would like to give something in support of this project, as I've started using it recently and it's fantastic. As a FOSS/privacy advocate myself, I would really love to donate with Monero, and I'm available to answer any questions about it.

I stumbled into the same problem with LiberaPay too.

All cryptocurrencies suffer the same problem: You need to convert your real currency into it (being a Bitcoin millionaire does not count here I think). So I'd rather open my Paypal mail address then my IBAN number to the internet. But of course, it's the developers who decide.

I'd be very surprised if any of the devs had a PayPal account at all. Very much doubt that. And well, converting Fiat is one way to obtain Crypto, but not the only one (you could e.g. use OpenBazaar to sell stuff for Crypto, or play some faucets for tiny earnings). But yeah, it's not that wide-spread as Fiat is…

Github just unveiled their sponsorship program, in theory that could be utilized?

Will will move away from github this summer

@ashimokawa will Github be kept as mirror? I might have missed it when skimming, but I didn't see that wouldn't qualify – one just needs a Github account (see here). From the description, they want the tax (W-8BEN for us non-US-citizens) and the bank data – so no PayPal, Stripe or the likes needed it seems. Which would be great. Like Liberapay without the ugly stuff

The W-8BEN is a bit nasty, though (paperwork). And giving those details to MS who owns Github now …

We will keep Microsift Github as a mirror.

Hi! Is there anything new on this topic? I would like to contribute as well but can't find a way.
