If I use fc as above, then fzf draw okay (meaning it will do only one draw).
If I use as below (need to get result from the fc command):

Then the prompt somehow give a double re-draw, causing quick splash/flick/flash.
So I don't know what is the cause of this behavior, why putting them into a subshell causing the issue? or this is from fc command itself?
I tried to use fzy for test and fzy does not causing splash that is in subshell:
selected=$(fc -rl 1 | fzy)

I can't reproduce the problem. Is it reproducible with a minimal shell configuration? i.e. no extra plugins and settings, but just fzf.

@LuRsT I tried with other env with zero .zshrc, no issue so far, I lived with this issue over a year and still not find why it happen, do you know any clues what would cause a splash when save fc -rl 1 | fzf to a variable?
No issue if I use:
fc -rl 1 | fzf --height 20%
Splash when issue:
cmd=$(fc -rl 1 | fzf --height 20%)
we need to save result to variable.
This is step by step produces -- issue didn't appear follow this minimal setup:
create an empty user with zsh shell:
sudo useradd -m -s /bin/zsh test
login to user:
su -l test
# enter password
press q to quit and do nothing
do test, by issue:
cmd=$(fc -rl 1 | fzf --height 20%)
and:
fc -rl 1 | fzf --height 20%
and see no difference.
It's very hard to tell but seem like it depends on size of history, I have like 50k zsh_history and the issue happens when I have clean zsh installation, no .zshrc, .zshenv.
I can't replicate it either :/
I tried a minimal env and give it 50k zsh history to test and report back.

Interesting @tmpm697, could you run it using strace to see how exactly fzf crashes? That will help us identify the issue. It could either be too many things to store in memory or maybe a certain line in your history causing it to break.

This is just a theory, I'm not expecting a line in history to break fzf, but I'm stumped on why do you get these problems. strace will most likely help us to find the problem.
We're wondering if this is the case where fzf is crashing because of some unfortunate series of characters that it can't properly handle. If that's the case, you could find the offending line in your shell history (binary search?) and let us know what it is.

So, according to the trace, fzf is not crashing. Then this is likely an issue of your zsh installation. Have you tried upgrading your zsh version?
I've had zsh-git install but still the same result. I tried with urxvt terminal and it happens too (before that was st)
Does this issue can be related to window manager?
I've just had a chance to test this issue on new setup, and I have zle reset-prompt on PS1 to reset time, with old setup of the same zsh history, I see constant blink.
The timer is 10s each.
With new setup I see rate 10/1 or similar that mean when I constantly emit zsh history with fzf, and at the same time 10s meet, I get a blink. --> reasonable, so this is issue of setup, not fzf.

I did revise zsh_history file, removed number of history events that span multiple lines. I believe event that span multiple lines caused issue, e.g: I often copy/paste whole functions from internet to terminal to test it function -- instead of open vim, paste, change permission, run script.

I tried to use ExecStart=-/usr/bin/agetty --autologin myuser --noclear %I $TERM but the same result so I don't think it's problem.
I rename old zsh_history to zsh_history,bak and start using new one for history, same all configs, no issue so far.
So the only difference between old and new history file is the old one got corrupted in the past and I had recover it (don't remember the command) successfully but I can guess it still cause this issue later.
