Files: Always use default view for new tab

Created on 11 Jan 2019  路  6Comments  路  Source: elementary/files

Not really an issue, more of a request.

If I change the default view of a tab in Files (not sure how it's called in english, grid?) and then open a new tab, the new view is used instead of the default one. It would be more consistent to use the default view whenever a new tab is opened I believe.

I don't like the idea of returning to grid mode if the user has selected another mode to use, supposing it was chosen because he likes it, overriding this behavior to an initial state like this may annoy someone that likes using list view or column view as default for example. So instead I propose it should use the last selected view mode instead of inheriting the open tab mode.

Do you mind posting screenshots?

@SixFingeredAmish it's actually quite simple to reproduce:

  1. Open a new tab in Files
  2. Select a view other than the default one (grid)
  3. Open another tab

The second tab will inherit the view of the previous tab, instead of the default view (grid)

I see. Yes this should be changed

How about adding a small arrow indicating a dropdown menu besides the grid/table icons with the ability to set it globally. should catch both needs/desires.

This can clutter the interface for a feature that may even not be an issue, I myself never gave attention to this behavior and probably most of us don't, being the last selected layout or the active tab layout, any of them works well for 99% of the use cases.
