Fec-cms: Ensure Record articles appear in feeds with the most recent article on top

Created on 4 Jan 2018  路  8Comments  路  Source: fecgov/fec-cms

In recent weeks, there were a couple of occasions when more than one Record news article was published on a given day. On those days, the article that was published earliest in the day ended up being the one at the top of the feed. While some of the feeds have since been tweaked to make the last article published the top one on the feed, not all of them have been.

For example: The home page feed and the legal resources "legal news" feed have been tweaked, with the last article posted showing up first (which is what we're after).

On the other hand, the Record page at https://www.fec.gov/updates/?update_type=fec-record and the feed on the latest updates page at https://www.fec.gov/updates/ show Record articles appearing in the order they were posted on a given day, but with the earliest article posted above articles posted later in the day.

To ensure consistency, we'd like to make sure all feeds for Record news articles show the articles with the most recent article posted appearing at the top.

Completion criteria

  • [ ] Ensure that all feeds of Record news articles are configured so that the most recent article posted is on top, and if more than one article is posted on a given day, so that articles are posted with the last one posted showing first (similar to the first screencap above).
Bug Low priority Front-end

All 8 comments

Closing this one out since it is very low priority and has a fairly easy workaround of not publishing two articles on the same day. We can revisit if we ever take on making online improvements to the Record.

We're revisiting this!

Wanted to update this because today (2/7/2019) we deployed three articles and I made sure to observe the pattern.
The article we posted first stayed on the home page and first in the list. Because we know about the bug, we knew to make sure that the one we posted first was the most important one. (That's not always possible to predict though.)
The article we posted second, bounced to third in the list on https://www.fec.gov/updates/?update_type=fec-record

Here's a screencap from today's Record feed so you see what I mean.

Is this ready to close?

Answering @AmyKort officially - this issue is still a pain point but it's one we are working around by making sure we post the most important article of the day first. That is not always easy to predict so we'd like to eventually fix this. It's not a high priority ticket.

@dorothyyeager @AmyKort we should prioritize this and plan to fix it this PI or in PI 12, or we should close it.

I'd vote for fixing in PI12. Especially when/if the Commission gets a quorum, the Record will have another spurt of news to post (right now obviously, there's not much so this is less of an issue for PI11). @PaulClark2 That said, it is low priority compared to other things.
