Desktop: Bring the desktop client to the stores?

Created on 6 Mar 2020  路  4Comments  路  Source: nextcloud/desktop

Hi,

I would like to be able to install the app over the Microsoft Store on Windows 10 or the Mac-Appstore on macOS. Maybe also for Linux? I think that you would be able to unload a lot of load off your servers and it brings features like automatic updates to the clients.

I think this should be additional to the traditional way of installing the client from the nextcloud website, so that you are not forced to use the stores.

So I think this would be really awesome.
Thanks!

Hi @szaimen,

thanks for your suggestion.

While it's a good idea in general, there's significant (and continuous) amount of work to port the client to these stores and keep it compliant (+ fees). We may consider it in the future. 馃憤

For Linux there's no official store, even though there are some central places nowadays. A lot of distros already provide packages and keep them up-to-date :)

Regarding the benefit of automatic updates: It's work in progress at the moment, to bring the updater functionality back to life, see #1847

At the moment I'm working on Sparkle re-integration (macOS auto-update), with Windows following as the next step.

@misch7 any thoughts on that? :)

@misch7 for linux you should rely on snaps ... there are installers for the snap system for all mayor distros.

Cf. #1034 for the discussion on Linux snaps
