Cwa-wishlist: App risk status screen: misleading wording

Created on 31 May 2020  Â·  6Comments  Â·  Source: corona-warn-app/cwa-wishlist

In the recently published (German language) screenshots one can see that in case of status "green" the app tells the user "no risky encounters so far" ("bisher keine Risiko-Begegnungen").
This is an unnecessarily imprecise wording which could be misleading and providing a false sense of safety to anyone who is not too familiar with the mechanism of the tracing system (i.e. probably to most users as well as most of the press and politics). Even if the app achieved an enormous penetration rate and if the bluetooth mechanism turned out 100.0% reliable the app would still not be in a position to make such an assertion (due to inevitable testing and reporting delay, untested asymptomatic cases who never report, etc).
I strongly suggest to use a more precise wording such as "no risky encounters detected so far" ("bislang keine Risiko-Begegnungen festgestellt/ermittelt"), which leaves less room for misinterpretation and false impressions of the capability of the tracing system. To some, it might look like a small, insignificant difference in wording, but it could help reduce misunderstandings and false assessments of the personal and public safety situation. Please make sure to be as precise as possible.

Sorry to hijack this issue, but will there be a "Leichte Sprache" version?
I suspect, from anecdotal evidence and experience from being with people with mental and cognitive disabilities, the wording and amount of the UI text is everything from overwhelming to totally incomprehensible.

I think the same holds true for those not native to the german language.

Also maybe such a simple language version should be the default.

I myself am comfortable with a UI using simple language, with the opportunity to read more complex documentation if needed.

Again sorry if this isn't the righ place, but I think the part of the UI that is discussed here, is such a central part, it should be as simple as possible.

My suggestions:

  • To markup like Risky Encounter may help the user to differentiate this from daily and soft wording.
  • If Risky Encounter is the preferred wording, only the same wording should be used in other places.
  • Regarding the Framework API, Exposure would be the preferred wording.
  • Regarding health departments, Contact ( enger Kontakt, Kontaktpersonen, ...) seems to be more appropriate than Encounter.
  • Finally a Risky Ecounter leaves a broad range of interpretation. For example one could consider any encounter in different regions to be more or less risky.

Dear colleagues,

in the meanwhile we got feedback from our UX/UI team and they want to say thank you for this input! It will be part of one of the next usability tests. Results are expected somewhen around end June/beginning of July. We will keep this issue open and "on hold" until then and get back to you with the feedback!

Mit freundlichen Grüßen/Best regards,

I'm surprised it takes a month to evaluate changes to the wording. Are there no preliminary results available by now to guide the discussion? It's been 18 days since this was raised.

it's also been 14 days since i raised this related issue here: https://github.com/corona-warn-app/cwa-wishlist/issues/110
no one appears to have looked at it

I would like to add to this topic:

At least in the German version of the Android App (now v1.3.0), after 14 days the app risk status screen switches from "1 Risiko-Begegnung" to "Bisher keine Risiko-Begegnungen". The "Bisher" (=so far) is actually wrong, since there was one in the past, even if it is not relevant any more.
I'd strongly suggest to change the wording (in the idea of this posting) to "Keine Risiko-Begegnungen festgestellt". Just drop the "Bisher". You could add "in den letzten 14 Tagen" (= in the last 14 days), but this could also be misleading.
The current form is bad UX.
