I tried compiling quite a few of the releases on 17.04 but got no dice. Most of the deps are not readily available through apt.

No, it's built against QT 5.6.1. What version of QT do you have installed, @vpassapera? 17.04 uses QT 5.7, so that's probably the root of this issue (and maybe the other ones, too?)
