Ah, I see. The one unexpected thing that I hadn't seen before was quitting from the dock quitting everything. I think that should act the same as quitting with Command-Q / the menu bar, since after the dock quit everything I assumed there was no way to quit the app without quitting the service. The dock icon doesn't appear to control the service, so it's surprising when it quits it as well.

@petey I don't understand. What do you mean by "Please choose one"? We just changed the logo (the first time we've changed it), so we've just chosen the new one.

Whatever it looks like, I don't need an icon for keybase both in the dock and in the toolbar (as it says in the title). Can you make it display just in the toolbar (like it used to), or just in the dock, or give people a mechanism to choose which one?

I see, sorry for my confusion. It's not true that it used to only display in the toolbar; it's been displaying in the dock as well for months. It's common for running applications with no windows open to retain an entry in the dock, as I understand it.

I never remember seeing keybase in the dock before the icon changed. I think of keybase like a background service, e.g. docker, dropbox, alfred. If you take a look at these tools, they do not display an icon in the dock when they have no displayed windows.

It could be that the new icon just makes it more obvious that something different is there.

I also agree that it wasn't showing in the dock before this change.

On my mac, when the Keybase app is open (Icon in the dock and toolbar),

if I chose quit in the top menu (equivalent of pressing command-q), the Keybase app closes, leaving only the "service" open in the toolbar. However if I choose quit by clicking in the Dock menu, the App and the service both close.

To recap:
Quit the app, without the "service"

Quit the app and the "service"

This seems weird to me. @petey you might be be able to get rid of the icon in the dock by "quitting" the app from the top menu (aka: command-q).

Hi! @louim's description of the quit semantics and dock behavior are correct, and they're intentional.

I'm clearly not the only one that considers this an issue:

The interaction of "Quit" being different based on what menu you use is confusing a lot of people.

This bug needs to be resolved. And make no mistake, it is a bug.
