Cataclysm-dda: Tainted bones endless farming

Created on 1 Oct 2018  路  9Comments  路  Source: CleverRaven/Cataclysm-DDA

Describe the bug
Skeletons could be used to farm tainted bones indefinetely by locking them somewhere and killing them again and again.

To Reproduce

  1. Kill a skeleton - it'll splatter with some bones
  2. Wait for it to revive
  3. Kill it again - you'll get more bones
  4. Repeat ad nauseam

Expected behavior
If they're going to splatter, maybe they should do it just once. Or, as an alternative, they could leave no corpse since the body literally exploded into separate bones and doesn't exist as a whole anymore.

Who said its a bug? Skeletons in lore are growing new bone plates as we speak, so if you want to exploit it in a way that you are able to lure a skeleton, and keep it in a place where its "safe" for you to kill it once a day or so, I'd say you deserve the prize.

tl:dr I knew about the problem but left it for the community to decide if its lore-acceptable exploit or it'd be considered a bug.

If we will decide that this is not a bug but a feature I can easily throw a snippet or two here and there to explain it lore-wise, i'm thinking lab notes "...it regrows bone in the revivification process..." + survival diary "...killed it 3 times already; bone piling up; it still stands up like nothing happen..." + npc snippets "... I've seen the bone farms, but who would need this much bone anyway...".

What's your personal opinion?

Since it's surely not a new feature request, I've chosen "bug".

It wasn't obvious from the monsters description that they can continue with growing more bones. To me it looked like they have grown some but now the process has finished and they can only lose bones. Am I missing any piece of lore that clearly stated that part of skeletons "life-after-death-cycle"?

What's your personal opinion?

I can live with any decision, but the "more lore" approach feels appealing. Tainted bones are not that hard to come by, so having a farm with traps for getting bones automatically is a decent prize for the effort to prepare one. And if you kill same skeletons again - you'll know why they continue dropping bones from the lore.

Maybe have it revive as something more dangerous each time? They are growing those bones in response to the environment, I can see farming them for bones making them adapt/evolve even faster.

Changing the dying message to something akin to "It falls down in a spray of some loosened bone pieces" or "It falls down. Its loose, cracked pieces of exoskeleton tumble away from it" could help here? Otherwise the situation follows the lore in that zombie, no matter the type, if it gets up it gets up healed, unless it's a burned kind of it though it's indeed pretty weird that skeletal zombies regrow such quantities of bone so easily.

In a post-cataclysm world we definitely build up the technology around z-power. Farming skeletons is the first step.

Next, we will lock an electronic Z and a cat in glass jails to farm free batteries.

The same design also applies to acid farming. But human must learn how to pickup liquids on the ground (hint: the key is straw).
