Azure-docs: Why are Partial ARM Templates created?

Created on 12 Aug 2020  Â·  11Comments  Â·  Source: MicrosoftDocs/azure-docs

From my understanding, they seem to be created when publishing from Data Factory reflecting the changes made due to the date/time stamps, but I can't find anything to support that.

Do we need to delete them from our adf_publish branch?

Can someone point me to any documentation or give me a reason as to why Partial ARM Templates are created?

If its the partialTemplates folder, yes. Nothing will be negatively impacted.

@ZohairTharani Thank you for your question. There's information about partial saves of ARM templates in the Advantages of Git integration section of the _Source control in Azure Data Factory_ article. The Linked Resource Manager templates in the article _Continuous integration and delivery in Azure Data Factory_ might also be helpful.

@davidsmatlak Thanks for your response! Just to clarify, these partial saves (Partial ARM Templates) are created every time you publish from master in Data Factory?

Would we need to delete these partial saves from our repo?

@ZohairTharani Your questions are specific to the Azure Data Factory service so I'll request a response from the Data Factory team. Thanks!

@djpmsft Can the Data Factory team respond to the customer's questions about partial saves of ARM templates? Thanks.

When you publish from ADF, an ARM template and correseponding parameters file and linked templates folder is generated. There is nothing you have to do after you click publish. The adf_publish branch comes into play when setting up a CI/CD solution as thats where you will point your release pipeline.

The Partial ARM Template folder is a legacy entity that is deprecated.

@djpmsft if it is legacy, can we delete them from our git repo to prevent confusion? Will anything be negatively impacted?

If its the partialTemplates folder, yes. Nothing will be negatively impacted.

Thanks for the feedback. This issue is resolved and will be closed.
