Azure-docs: Device ID should match the other tutorials

Created on 30 Jun 2020  Â·  7Comments  Â·  Source: MicrosoftDocs/azure-docs

On this page there is a device ID that is "myFirstDevice" and then it says "Change this parameter only if you modified it from the one used in Send telemetry from a device to an IoT hub."

In that sentence the last part is a link to another tutorial where the .Net code names the device "MyDotnetDevice".

They should be consistent throughout the examples.

Thanks for the feedback! We are currently investigating and will update you shortly.

@chschrae I have assigned the issue to the content author @robinsh for further review and update the doc as appropriate.

@chschrae The variables that are used between different tutorials may be the same, but for unconnected tutorials, it is not necessary. I'm kind of loathe to change, for example, the routing tutorial, because it's not just a sample, there is also sample powershell and sample CLI and a sample Azure Resource management template. (Come to think of it, that series of tutorials uses the same device id.) At any rate, we'll take a look and see what's interrelated and see if we can make this a more consistent experience. Thanks for letting us know.

@chschrae Thanks for your feedback -- that is indeed an issue with the article you cited. I've changed the code to use a variable for the device ID and point the user to the c# telemetry quickstart article to get the value to set the variable to. This is similar to what we do for the c2d message how-to's for the other languages. I also updated the screenshots for the steps that have you run the samples. The article is live now. Please have a look and let me know if there is anything else that needs to be addressed.

I did a quick check and this is the only article I saw where the mismatch in device IDs occurred. Please let me know if you know of any others.

I'll leave this open for a couple of days for your feedback.

Thanks again,

Jimaco
