Recently Slack stopped showing up in AltTab, no matter what I do.

I do have Slack set. to show on all Spaces, but I also have Spotify set this way and it shows up in AltTab as expected.

Update: I just tried updating to version 4.1.6 to see if that would help, but now I can't start AltTab at all.

It hangs on boot, a blank space appears in the status bar where it should be, but the logo doesn't load.

I reproduced by opening console, starting AltTab, letting it hang for a bit, then killing the process. Console logs below:

Hi @nathang21! I'm sad to hear that, especially the crash! That's terrible news.

I just tried the update to 4.1.6 locally. It restarted, and worked perfectly fine. I then booted Slack > works. Then I assigned it to all spaces > works great. Really not sure what could be happening for you here.

Regarding the crash with 4.1.6, that crash report is terrifying. I see mentions of daemons and death sentinels 🙀 Apparently AltTab was caught burning CPU! then Death sentinel fired!. Ok I'll confess I smiled when I read this; the guys at Apple are clearly having fun with the OS control processes. It's not a good thing though. I wonder what's happening here

I doubt that's its the root cause, but it's intriguing. The documentation doesn't make any sense to me, and why AltTab would require this entitlement. Also if this is somehow missing, it's been missing for many many versions.

I believe you pasted the logs from Console.app here. Is there a crash report in Console.app as well? Another useful thing would be to use Activity Monitor and sample AltTab when it's spinning and going crazy with the CPU (apparently):

Not a lot happening in this dump. It seems that the app is doing a tight loop in one of the background thread. I don't understand why this doesn't happen on my machine.

Could you try resetting the security permissions of AltTab (Accessibility and Screen Recording) by running this command?

Regarding the high CPU issue, I raised a PR with a fix. However, I'm pretty sure that this only fix the symptoms of your issue. I don't think this code actually fixes your crash, or helps any user significantly.

Yes the code was doing a tight loop on the background threads, but normally the main thread quickly adds events to process on these background threads, and the tight loops stop. The question here is: why are these events sources not being added on the background threads? That's why I'm suspicious of some system permissions shenanigans

I reviewed the logs you just posted here + the 2 files you added to the GoogleDrive. There is really not much here to work with.

Could you please try out that build I made locally? It has the little fix I linked to, above. It's the only idea I have for now. It should no longer make the CPU go crazy at launch. I expect you would still have issues though, so if you can please do another dump with Activity Monitor in that case

I checked the man page of sample and now I have better understanding of these numbers on the left of each line in the stack trees. It would appear that the app is stuck on waiting for semaphore to be released. I introduced these semaphore to cap the number of threads generated by some tasks. For example, when summoning AltTab, it will grab each window screenshot on a different thread, and when all screenshots are taken, will display the UI on the main thread.

If you naively dispatch 1 task on a DispatchQueue for each screenshot, there are 2 problems:

you face thread explosion: there is a hard limit in GCD. After a certain amounts of tasks, GCD will simply crash your app
performance is wasted on context switches and cache misses as the CPU switches from thread to thread

That's why I introduced a semaphore to cap the number of thread to the number of CPU cores.

In version 4.1.6, I also added a cap for a difference kind of tasks. It's a bit too much to explain as there is a lot of complexity going on here. Somehow it seems to make it possible to deadlock on your machine. I can't understand why when reasoning about the code.

Here is a build where I removed the semaphore caping introduced in 4.1.6. Could you please try it?

Sorry for all these attempts but I can't understand the issue statically reading the code, and it just doesn't happen on my machine, even when I play with the cap value to hope to get in the right race condition perhaps.

As for the original issue, Slack is appearing now so not sure if that was a fluke but I will update this issue. if I am able to reproduce it.

Update: Not sure if this was a side effect of your changes, but the Mouse hover option (which I keep disabled) doesn't seem to be working as expected with this build.

I tried turning it on and off, but it seems regardless of the setting, the feature is always on. I can record a video + logs if needed.

Essentially, if I don't touch my mouse, and I hold Alt + Tab, and toggle through apps, the popup UI is stable and works as expected.
However, when I do the same thing plus move my mouse for a second, the UI immediately closes and selects whatever window I was tabbed through in the popup UI. This is odd as it's not even the window I am hovering over with the mouse.

I can open a separate issue if you would prefer, but for now keeping it to this since it's a special build.

Hey @nathang21! It's nice that removing the cap makes it work for you. Also the issue with Mouse hover seems really unrelated, like how can this be linked? Very puzzling.

I made another build with the cap back, that could potentially work. Also I tested the Mouse hover on that build and when I uncheck, the preference works (also when checked).

Could you please try this one out and let me know if it works?

Just confirming, that build is also working for me. Made quick video showing all 3 issues (with 2/3 resolved). Not sure whats going on with the house hover.

Maybe it's a weird keyboard shortcut conflict again with Karabiner-Elements? I don't have any mouse macros, so that seems odd.

I think my issue was related to something funky going on with Karabiner-Elements, as I can no longer reproduce the issue with the mouse hovering.

I've since cleared all my custom configs, and moved to a more polished solution for my key mapping preferences.

Anyways, please feel free to close this out, I've now got all 3/3 of my issues resolved, while running AltTab 4.1.6. Thanks for all your help, let me know if there's any more debugging steps that would be helpful for you regarding any of the related issues.

Edit: I see 4.1.7 was released, just for completeness I updated and tried with that as well. Everything works as expected.
