Aerial: Weather info function not working on macOS High Sierra

The weather info function is not working when Aerial (1.9.1) is activated but yet works fine when I run the test to check function. I've got the latest beta update (set for daily updates) so, I'm kind of stymied. Also, if I choose to manually specify my location, it won't allow me to insert my location manually as was indicated in issue #1008. It maintains the default of Paris, FR. System is as follows:

iMac (27-inch, Late 2009)
MacOS High Sierra (version 10.13.6)
2.8 GHz Intel Core i7
32 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
2TB SSD
Graphics card: ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB

Let's roll back a bit as I'm not 100% clear here to what you are seeing.

In this tiny preview in red, do you see the weather popping up or not ?

And when you say it works in preview, you mean that green button ? That works too ? But you don't get it to work when the screensaver starts normally, do I get that right ?

I do have a couple of suspicions here, but a debuglog would be nice, please do the thing mentionned in the issue template : please enable Debug mode and Log to disk in Advanced tab and replicate your bug, then attach the AerialLog.txt file (You can access this file through the Advanced tab).

In the meantime you can also check the Security tab, I think it's about the same in high sierra, you may need to explicitly allow location for something called "ScreenSaverEngine".

It's very likely that you are getting denied permission for Location services when in full screen mode. It's a bit different in Catalina but the idea should be the same.

(and when you do send the log, don't do it by mail, that doesn't work, attach from the github UI thanks)

No, I don’t see the weather popping up in the area you circled in red. However, when I click on “Preview” (or in your case “Apercu”), it does work. Then, in normal operation, it doesn’t work. I wanted to reply back as soon as I could but, I’m actually in the middle of some other things right now. I’ll see to provide the log file as soon as I can. Thanks!

In the meantime you can also check the Security tab, I think it's about the same in high sierra, you may need to explicitly allow location for something called "ScreenSaverEngine".

It's very likely that you are getting denied permission for Location services when in full screen mode. It's a bit different in Catalina but the idea should be the same.

(and when you do send the log, don't do it by mail, that doesn't work, attach from the github UI thanks)

I think you might have checked the first option here (in red) and left the lattitude/longitude fields blank ? If that's the case, press the little compass I circled in yellow, that will grab your location (you may get a security prompt). Save your settings, close System Preferences and tell me if it changed anything, thanks !

When you do have some time please carefully follow those instructions as we're talking past each other a bit here:

• First please give me a screenshot of your Weather settings, like this one :

• Second, there's a Test button I circled in red, please press it and tell me if you see an error next to the button, of if a window pops like this (a screenshot would be nice too) :

• Third, find where AerialLog.txt is in Finder and keep that Finder window. Then please close System Preferences, the whole window, not just Aerial's Panel as it messes with the logs and I have a hard time reading them with multiple instances launched. Now delete AerialLog.txt to start fresh, keep your finder window. Now launch once the screensaver using a hot corner or something, then attach the newly created file (from the Finder window you kept around). This way I'll get an easy to read log.

Aerial gets your coordinates so there's no issue with location services. But it should be immediately followed by this, here's an example from here:

Well, it only worked on macOS 14 or above as I put a couple of lines of codes at the wrong place. If you want the technical explanation, the bug is exactly here :

When you want to request the location on modern macOS, you have to call locationManager.requestLocation(), but that's only available in macOS 10.14+. The problem was, the two lines above. Because if you don't have 10.14, macOS will just start giving you location, no question asked (and keep doing it). So in that case, macOS gave me the location, but since those two lines were missing, the code was never calling back the success callback, which was used in the chain to get to the next step (calling Yahoo's API).

That explains why it basically never called Yahoo's API. Now you might be curious, how come the preview worked ?

Well, first, you were pretty unlucky because it sent me through the wrong path of thinking ! The tiny preview that didn't work asked for the location, which macOS gave. But because of the issue above, it never called the Yahoo API so it didn't display anything in that tiny window. But ! When you launched the full screen preview, Aerial had actually cached the location received earlier by the tiny preview. And because it reused that (trying not to ask your location too often), that full screen preview worked (Aerial knew your location, and used it to call Yahoo's API directly).

It's really a stupid bug in the end, I misremembered how location services worked prior to 10.14 when writing the weather thing and there you go ;)

Great! It's still not showing the weather widget in the tiny preview window (above the "Screen Saver Options..." button) but, the preview works just fine (as it always did) and the screensaver is now working fine under normal operating conditions.

Make sure you restarted System Preferences after installing 1.9.2, that could explain the tiny preview thing. Updating Swift screensavers is still a mess to this day.

I've noticed from time to time that the Yahoo Weather API doesn't respond, it's pretty rare but that happens too, so if you don't see weather once in a while, it could be that too.
