zplug update --self does not find zplug git repository

Created on 5 Dec 2016  路  3Comments  路  Source: zplug/zplug

Problem Summary

When trying to run % zplug update --self as suggested in the docs, I get this error:
fatal: Not a git repository: '/home/gregor/.zplug/repos/zplug/zplug/.git'

When manually checking out the repository into the expected location, it works, but I guess zplug should check out the repo transparently in the background?

System Information

4.8.0-28-generic #30-Ubuntu SMP
zsh 5.2 (x86_64-ubuntu-linux-gnu)
git version 2.9.3
zplug version 2.3.3

Minimal zshrc

using standard unchanged init.zsh
