Arguably not the world's best timing 馃槤 but how about:

I think we should really reach the maintainers out for the new icons
Does the team object to me contacting Inkscape on our collective behalf? They might like it, to be fair?
EDIT: Draft e-mail for comments, EDIT 2: included comment about the dark background:
_Dear Inskcape,_
_First of all, thank you for your amazing app, which I use every day._
_I'm helping the design team on the new default theme for Ubuntu, and wanted to check on an acceptable use of your trademark._
_Currently, we're trying to achieve an approach where all app icons are displayed on rounded square tiles, or "squircles". This is similar to how Windows 10 displays app icons on square tiles. The default wallpaper and launcher for Ubuntu are very dark, so the squircle tiles allow dark icons (like Inkscape) to appear on a light background for improved visibility._
_We want to eventually have a solution where this can be done automatically for each icon, but, for now, I have to manually put the Inkscape logo in a squircle to make it work. I wanted to reach out to show you what your icon will look like when it's displayed inside a squircle, and check that you're happy._
_I've attached a mockup that shows part of the current Ubuntu launcher, with all the app icons displayed in squircles. As you can see, Inkscape is framed by a light grey squircle to suit the colours of the logo. The icon is otherwise completely unaltered. Are you happy for me to proceed with this for our theme?_
_Cheers,_ etc.
I might even add something like, _"You can also see that the default launcher and wallpaper are dark, so I believe the black icon would be harder to see if it didn't have the light background."_
Good news, @Feichtmeier, @madsrh, @clobrano: I heard back from a lawyer at the non-profit organisation which holds the rights to Inkscape's trademarks on behalf of Inkscape. They confirmed that they are _"happy for Ubuntu to continue moving forward with this theme and using the Inkscape logo as you depicted it in the attached mockup,"_ which was:

Someone (@didrocks?): would you like me to forward the lawyer's e-mail for Canonical's records?
Given the recent change in direction, should we close this issue? 馃
It is a nicely done icon regardless. Very impressive.
Closing this since the recent direction of out icon theme :)
