xubuntu 16.10 fresh install:
~$ sudo apt install xrdp
connect via Xorg - blackscreen
What version of xrdp is it? If it's anything older than 0.9.1, please try 0.9.1. The same question about xorgxrdp? If it's not 0.2.0, please try 0.2.0.
What do you see in /var/log/xrdp-sesman.log?
By the way, all issues with the distro packages should be reported to the distro bug tracker.

Which desktop manager do you use? Is it installed? You can try to use mate.

xubuntu has XFCE as default desktop manager and yes it is installed
You should check if /etc/xrdp/startwm.sh is actually running a desktop
manager for you. This script is being executed by xrdp-sesman after a user
has logged using xrdp.

commented last 2 rows and added direct session call in /etc/xrdp/startwm.sh:
xfce4-session
still have the same problem
I can reproduce the bug with a fresh install from ubuntu 16.10, with xfce minimal, and the 0.9.1 release +0.2.0 for xorgxrdp.
xrdp/xrdp-sesman running at service fails to start the session, but running both daemon at foreground makes the session start correctly
This is a systemd error, according to Xorg's log compared between running and failed session

I got more deeply on this problem. The change in Xorg is resumed here: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1176442#c1
A workaround is to set Xorg suid
A long term solution is to register a session in logind
confirm, setting suid to Xorg resolves problem
@moobyfr, thank you for investigation and workaround
Considering the error messages, my guess is that it would be better to prevent Xorg from trying to access /dev/dri/card0. Ideally, it should be done in the xorg.conf file that comes from xorgxrdp. Of maybe one of the xorgxrdp modules could suppress DRI programmatically.
I would prefer fixing logind issue directly, as xrdp start a new session, we should register the session in systemd: systemd makes assumptions about a seat being used, more things could break (real example: if you log out from your xrdp session, you'll close the actual session too if you launched xrdp manually)
There are lots of updates pushed by systemd developers which will require adapting daemons services sooner or later (like https://github.com/tmux/tmux/issues/428)
Changing the sticky bit didn't work for me. Assuming I sudo chmod u+s on the right files.
lsb_release 16.10
xrdp -v 0.9.0
/usr/bin/Xorg -rws
/usr/lib/xorg/Xorg -rws
On a new apt-get install of xrdp I can remote in successfully.
After a shutdown -r will I get a black screen. .
Afert having rebooted and the black screen appears, I can shell in an apt-get remove xrdp followed by apt-get install xrdp. Then remote works fine.
Rinse and Repeat, If I reboot, I get black screen until I remove/install again.
I am running xubuntu, its also a vmware guest.

Can this be translated for n00bs like me? suid = superuser ID? How to set?

What I found is that setting suid on the /usr/bin/Xorg script is insufficient. You'll need to open up said script, find the path of executable that it runs, and suid on _that_. (chmod u+s)
It seems that the same issue occurs now on debian stretch with all recent updates installed. A solution for this problem in stretch is to uninstall the package "xserver-xorg-legacy".

I went to /usr/bin/Xorg and found that it references /usr/lib/xorg/Xorg. That file's permissions:
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2432376 Mar 27 11:43 Xorg
I did chmod u+s and rebooted for good measure. Made no difference.

There is no xserver-xorg-legacy package installed for me.
I am on Ubuntu 17.04.
everythink works good since v0.9.2, build it from sources if ur distro have lower version of xrdp
Debian based distro needs to edit /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config. See https://github.com/neutrinolabs/xrdp/issues/764#issuecomment-304576785. Reporter says now it works good, closing.
Thanks, https://github.com/neutrinolabs/xrdp/issues/598#issuecomment-307726778 did the trick on Ubuntu 17.10!
sudo sed -i 's/allowed_users=console/allowed_users=anybody/' /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config
Ubuntu 17.04
sed: can't read /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config: No such file or directory
What am I doing wrong? Where is my Xwrapper?
Creating this file manually and adding this line gives nothing.
Still struggling with black screen of xfce. Any suggestions?
Please don't hijack closed issue. Reporter says now it works good, this issue is finished. Raise your own issue.
Plus, blank screen is the issue "before" WM. WM starts after Xorg starts. Your issue seems Xorg is not starting. Changing WM has no effect. I should say you again, please don't think WM issue. You have some things to try before trying multiple WM.
It works for me: https://vinnyfs89.gitbook.io/knowledge/technology/operational-systems/linux/how-to#remote-access-using-the-xrdp-package
Look at these lines below:
# Allow firewall access on port 3389
ufw allow 3389
# Change "allowed_users" to anybody
# like this: allowed_users=anybody
vim /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config
