Wp-calypso: People: Link to follower blogs? #question

Created on 23 Oct 2016  路  13Comments  路  Source: Automattic/wp-calypso

Hi All!

I've just been exploring and landed on the people/followers page.
I felt as though I would expect to be able to click either the follower name, @name or some sort of link icon to be able to easily link through to their blog.

Is there a UX reason for there being no link?

As always - I'm happy to pop open a PR to add this behaviour if it's something we agree would be an improvement :)

Link to the followers page:
http://calypso.localhost:3000/people/edit/<- username ->/<- sitename ->.wordpress.com

follower

If you go to a sites Stats - Insights page, below Followers there are links to the most recent 10 follower's primary sites. Would it be possible to do the same on /people/followers as we do on /stats/insights/?

Thank you for your suggestion鈥攚e have discussed this in the past and hope to improve the user cards in the future.

As people can have more than one site we wouldn't necessarily want to link their name to their primary site. Instead it would be more useful at this time to add links here to the sites listed in their profile:

We probably need to build first a page that "shows" the user across Calypso, starting with something simple and then build up.

@fraying, do you think it would be possible to have one of your designs scaled down for a very very very very basic MVP (just avatar / name / privacy settings / sites)?

@folletto I'd love to help however I can. DM me so we can discuss? Not sure what the ask here is exactly.

100% for this. Seems like an oversight that you can follow from /stats/insights/ but not from /people/followers/.

@spen What do you think about looping back to this one soon? I think it fell in the cracks of various teams, and if it's a quick 1-2 day change on Samus would be super cool to improve this view and make it more interactive.

Oh wow! An oldie :) I'll make sure we're tracking it so it doesn't fall through more cracks!

I think I'm missing something here, unless there has been an update since this issue was created.

Currently, there is a link to the person's blog if they have set a public site in their profile (I think that's how it works). If they have no site, there is no link.

Does this solve the issue?

@drw158 Can you share the URL of where you took that screenshot? It could be a different view.

I'm testing with these steps:

  1. Login, click People
  2. Click Followers
  3. I do see that the blogs are linked now, cool!
  4. But, I can't follow that person right from the list.

If you compare with /stats/insights you can click their name to view their blog or just follow right there.

I don't know how to navigate to the link in the OP:

http://calypso.localhost:3000/people/edit/<- username ->/<- sitename ->.wordpress.com

The screenshot was taken from this link

https://wordpress.com/people/followers/

Edit: in the original post, it wasn't really about following, but just linking to their blog. It looks like the link opens a Reader view, where you can easily follow them, so maybe this issue could be closed?

We've had this some problem in Notifications before, and we ultimately decided that users would want to see the person's blog before following them. So just from personal experience, I don't think a follow button would be great here. I would want to see the blog I'm actually following first.

Just confirming that I too see the persons blog linked where it wasn't before.
Feel free to close this up depending on the decision made about adding ability to follow right away :)
