Wordpress-android: Comments: per-post comments disabled even though allowing comments is enabled globally

Created on 11 Dec 2019  ·  31Comments  ·  Source: wordpress-mobile/WordPress-Android

Posts published via the app have “Allow Comments” off even though the My Sites > Settings > Discussion > Allow Comments option is toggled on.

Hi, I was wondering if you could help me. I recently messaged about how the comments section was switched off on recent posts and how I fixed it by logging into the online WordPress (as I usually use the app) and going onto the individual posts and switching it back. Even though in my settings I've it set so that comments are allowed, each post now has to be manually approved for that which is strange and I was wondering if this is a glitch as it's only started happening recently now. Just annoying as I never usually log in online I just use the app but now I have to log in to make sure the comments are on for each post. Would appreciate any help with this, it seems to only be happening since I updated WordPress in the play store, hope this makes sense. Kind regards

Noting part of a discussion we had about this case earlier which may be helpful:

Took a quick look at the code for the v1.1 and v1.2 REST endpoints to create and update a post. A discussion parameter can be passed to enable or disable comments (among other things) but if it isn’t specified nothing specific is done. I’d assume that whatever the default is for the site would apply? I double checked the WPiOS post service and post service remote code and it doesn't look like discussion is one of the passed parameters.

Note: a few of us have tried a few times to replicate this bug but have not been able to so far.

Hello, please help me get my comments back on the articles. It's my first blog, my first year, for free, I didn't go crazy for settings and today I found out that they are disabled in the published article, although under "settings", the general ones are activated.

Depuis les 3 derniers articles que j'ai créé, le champ commentaire n'apparait plus? Les personnes qui consultent n'ont plus la possibilité d'écrire. Pouvez-vous me dire d'où vient le problème.

I still had the problem of comments getting turned off automatically, while drafting my blog post yesterday. I also wish to inform you that on my blog post of last Saturday, I might have missed out on some blog comments.

@mchowning is this something you can look into? It sounds like it's possible we aren't sending the discussion parameter for new posts and maybe it used to default to comments being on but that is no longer happening since version 13.4 for several users.

👍 I'll pick this up next.

I also haven't been able to recreate this issue. I have tested with current develop (82f6294cc4), the current production app, along with the 13.5, and 13.4 apps. I also looked at the json that is being sent when we publish posts and Android and iOS and I didn't notice anything concerning.

In my testing, on both platforms we update the default comments enabled state by switching the toggle in the settings screen. When we publish a post we do not include any information about the comments being enabled for the post, and the server responds telling us (among other things) whether comments were enabled for the published post (which in my testing always reflected the site default).

The only ways I was able to have the comments disabled on a post published from mobile were to either:

  • Default comments to be disabled on mobile and publish a post on mobile;
  • Default comments to be disabled on web, and publish a post on mobile; or
  • Draft a post on web with the comments disabled for that specific post only, and publish that post from mobile

😕

Another report.

The user checked their app's discussion settings and they are allowing comments -- matching the site's Calypso settings.

Also, while the app settings note that they can override their default settings for individual posts, there doesn't seem to be such an option under the Post Settings.

Wordpress for Android version 13.9
Using a Huawei P10 with Android 9.0.1
The problem occurs for every post I make using the app
On the app, I’m using Block editor

Type of site: WordPress.com free

We've had some trouble replicating and debugging this one and need more info! Can you document as many of the following things as possible for each future case?

  • App version
  • Device OS version
  • Type of site (which plan?)
  • Active theme
  • Does the problem happen for every post or just some?
  • Does the problem still happen if they try to create a new post and never use the preview option in the app?
  • Which editor were they using? As an experiment, if they toggle the Settings > "Use block editor" setting, does the problem go away the next time they post?
  • WordPress app version is 13.9
  • Android OS is 6.0.1.
  • Free WordPress.com Site
  • Active theme: Libretto
  • it doesn't happen on every post. The problem shows up for a few posts, stops for a few, only to recur.
  • It doesn't seem to matter what editor I use or whether I use preview or not

This issue is not yet fixed. It turns out Github's auto-close is a bit more aggressive than I thought about the fix XX usage.

Another possible instance of this issue.

The comment section gets automatically turned off for every new post even though the discussion and comment is turned on in the settings. To change it back they have head to their desktop site and tick the comment section on for individual posts. This has started in this month or so.

I have found a couple of tickets which reported the same bug

2842780-zen
2846251-zen

@Tug @melindahelt I am not entirely sure why we made the assumption that these users were having this issue. As far as I can tell there hasn't been any discussion on those tickets about what the user is experiencing and we just assumed that it's related to this. I checked both of their sites and at least some of their posts have comments enabled and we didn't ask them which posts had their comments disabled and whether they created these posts after the fix was released. Basically there is nothing to go on in those tickets and nothing really that ties it to this ticket.

This was a _very_ specific issue and it'd be unlikely to come up again. If it did, we'd need all the information we could get. As mentioned in this comment we have reproducable steps for this issue and we should utilize that to our advantage and ask questions to verify our assumption that it's indeed this issue that they are experiencing.

@Tug Let's please include some information about the tickets when we are re-opening issues instead of just adding links to them. We try our best to avoid working with internal links and add as much detail as we can into tickets since this is an open source project.

I am not entirely sure why we made the assumption that these users were having this issue.

Your last message on this thread https://github.com/wordpress-mobile/WordPress-Android/issues/10951#issuecomment-583412200 and the fact that we were seeing seemingly related tickets on zendesk made me think that this issue was closed by mistake.

I indeed tried the steps you mentioned in your link in both WPAndroid and WPiOS and was not able to reproduce.
