Woocommerce: Duplicate Orders are Created

Created on 19 Apr 2017  Β·  47Comments  Β·  Source: woocommerce/woocommerce

EXPLANATION OF THE ISSUE

Duplicate orders are created, particularly in times of heavy site & store usage.

Occurred on last release of WC v2. Updated to WC v3 several days ago, waiting on staff to confirm issue still exists.

Seems similar to #10453. Sometimes payments are processed, but not recorded in WC, sometimes the payment is not processed. Happens for multiple payment processors(Strip & Paypal).

STEPS TO REPRODUCE THE ISSUE

  1. Simulate high usage using a program such as siege.
  2. Place orders.
  3. Eventually, one purchase will create multiple orders.

WHY IS THIS NOT RESOLVED?

I believe this is related to #12467. Once we have good concurrent checkout handling in place, issues like this shouldn't happen. We're working on a good solution for the problem and will most likely have one in version 4.0.

^ that

this is happening to one of my installations. any idea when there will be a fix?

This is a major issue for us right now. Store we work on did a sale and did about 2000 orders today and tons of duplicates that we had to write a script to void out before batching happened. If this hadn't been caught, it would've been a customer service nightmare for refunding, overdrafting accounts, etc.

@prikhi @aeadvertising @MillerMedia we have a solution planned for WC 3.2.

We are having this same problem during our holiday sale. There have been triple and even quad duplicate orders. Extremely frustrated. Anybody here already open a ticket with Woo regarding this issue?

I have several open.. and they just say change the theme and deactivate all
plugins. Almost gives me the feeling that they are ignoring this is an
issue. Really frustrating.

@pbservices @aeadvertising we are not ignoring the issue. This issue will be resolved in an upcoming WooCommerce version. Implementing a robust, backwards-compatible solution for handling concurrent checkouts is very complicated and takes time to spec out and develop.

I'm glad to hear this is a priority. I have some really patient customers
(and some pissed off ones) who need this resolved as it is affecting their
standing with paypal / stripe / square with all the chargebacks, refunds
and disputes this has caused.

We have never had this problem in the past, so it must be something the devs overlooked on one of their latest updates. As for disabling plugins and changing themes, that is not a viable troubleshooting step whatsoever for this particular issue. I too opened a ticket but have not heard back yet. Hopefully they can roll out a patch soon, but considering that it has been nearly two weeks and today is Sunday... I'm not holding my breath.

I have also been monitoring my real time google stats and there is nothing crazy about our visitor count (currently 12-15 users). So this is definitely a new bug on Woo's end as we have had higher numbers in the past without issue.

@pbservices This issue is regarding high traffic. If you don't feel this applies to yourself, have you done some basic checks like ensuring the place order button becomes disabled on click?

@mikejolley I'm not saying it doesn't apply to us, but what I am saying is that the traffic to our site has not been anything crazy out of the norm when looking at the stats from the past two months... https://www.screencast.com/t/timsXc0tg55

Nor is it even close to the traffic we have seen during our black friday sales week... https://www.screencast.com/t/cH2sloqXQW

And we never had one duplicate order during those peaks. So there is definitely a bug somewhere in the code.

As for the order button, it does disable upon click... https://www.screencast.com/t/lvsTQjxiKs

Why is this issue marked as closed?

@pbservices Because there are other issues logged to deal with this. This is not a support forum, so we don't keep all issue threads open.

ok, where can I track this?

thanks

There are several comments above which link to related issues.

Since this was used 7 days ago, I thought I'd comment here.
I've had the same duplicate issues during high volume the past few days, however I disabled the "Agree to terms and conditions" option at checkout and the issue no longer occurs. I know that it's an unlikely culprit, but I'm duplicate-free now and I haven't added/removed/updated any plugins since the issue started - only disabled the terms and conditions.
I hope this may help.

can someone help me out here, Duplicate Orders are Created for my users at my cart page

I am also seeing duplicated orders - but it is random and not every order.

I am seeing it on two different sites, but not on a third. They are all set up very similarly - but not exactly. The first two use PayPal (one uses PDT, the other IPN) but the third store uses Stripe and I am not seeing the issue on that store (no duplicated orders).

I am thinking this could be a PayPal issue. Very hard to reproduce as it is so random.

Duplicate orders can be created if checkout is slow, as in order creation time is slow or if the site is having database connection issues so latency is happening. Since the customer using the site would assume the order did not get created, then tries to place the order again. You can notice this happening during high traffic events, if there are lot of orders being created at time.

Why in God's name is this still not resolved? We have been experiencing this issue for months, can reproduce the issue, and Woocommerce still hasn't fixed this?

Is this still being looked at? It's been a recurring problem on one of our sites, and with holiday season here, it is causing a lot of extra work for staff to refund orders and communicate with customers. We just had an order be processed 8 times.

We found a fix for our site. It was a combination of plugins being
incompatible and server settings.

@mhurrell Could you post what plugins and servers settings were causing the issue?

@mhurrell Could you please give us more information about how you fixed it ? Thanks!

@mhurrell Which plugins? What settings?

@mhurrell Any chance you could give feedback on which plugins and server dettings?

I found the same issue on WC 4.0.1. Not consistent but found occassionaly. But when the clustomer try to Place Order sometimes 2 and sometime more than 2 duplicate orders are created. Can someone give clue how to correct the issue?
I've seen this issue very first time. Is there any way to fix?

We found that this generally has happened on our end during sales with a high load of traffic on server/database. @vantiya for your issue, is it during times of high traffic or is it during more general times?

Hi @MillerMedia Thanks for your comments. I've read that the issue is with Concurrency implementation of checkout and high traffic but there was not much traffic on website during this days :( However, I have found some errors and issues with plugins, still not sure, I will confirm once I fix the issue, if that cuase of plugin. So other can get more idea about this issue in future.

@vantiya Yes would love to know what you find. We haven't really experienced this much at all in the past six months, even on high traffic sites. We had previously hacked together an extension plugin to check if an order was placed with the past 15 minutes by the same person with the same items and order total which helped but it was definitely not a perfect solution.

We found this only seemed to occur when site using PayPal payment gateway. Sites using Stripe didn't seem to have issues. Haven't had issue for long time now. What payment system are you using? Maybe try changing it.

We also had this issue and opened a ticket with Woo support - but they insisted we needed to be able to duplicate the issue and we could not. We spent an unreasonable amount of man hours chasing this issue down to no end, so my only advice is spending time pouring through log files and removing and adding plugins etc, will yield nothing. We updated everything, changed plugins, removed plugins - to no end. We moved the site to AWS and to increase the server size and power and that reduced the duplicates from 5 -10 per day to 1-2 per day. We are using PayPal and we believe this is at the heart of the issue, but can't confirm. Next week we plan to switch to Stripe or Woo Payments to see if that helps. All I can say folks is this is a real problem and WOO needs to own up to it ASAP as people around here are talking about moving to a new platform. Oh - What gets my goat and what aggravates me the most is the fact that we had 2 constant issues, double payment, double orders with only one payment But today what do you know we now have double orders!! Yep could it get any worse! Yes, you heard me - we had a customer send contact us, they got 2 identical orders. Also try this one on for size. While there is no normal way to move an order into processing without payment, this bug has no problem moving orders into processing with no payment. It would not be so bad if the order stayed in awaiting payment and did not get into the workflow to jam things up! But no woo lets them right in. Next week we are off paypal - I will let you know how that goes, and after that maybe off woo if they don't get this resolved. Should not be very hard to write software to verify and at least sandbox duplicate orders - they are 100% duplicate. Where is the patch!

Opening because of recent discussions.

Yeah, we had so many issues with paypal - now we only recommend Stripe to clients. Happy to report we moved all clients away with PayPal (all except one but they seem to have not the issue). We didn't experience the problem anymore since removing paypal. But going to follow this incase.

I am experiencing same problem. Some times double, last day it was 4 same order. I use Moneris gateway. Site is little bit slow. Not always duplicate order.

I have the same duplication order problem with different numbers. I do not have any payment gateway installed, only by bank transfer or cash on delivery. I can't find what the problem is.

Hi @MillerMedia and all guys!

My issue is bit different. I found the issue this weekend.

Let me elaborate what issue I had.

  1. Store has all variation product on my store. There are few products which have only one Variation but when that product was imported using WP ALL Import it was set as Simple Product. That should not the issue absolutely with WC.

  2. Client wanted to Generate Slips and Invoice PDF and send it to customer through email.
Client has installed Plugins "WooCommerce PDF Invoice & Packing Slip Generator - by RedefiningTheWeb". When customer place order the plugins throws error for Simple product that was added in cart ( - It doesn't found color attribute for simple product :( surprised! Yeah I too ). Customer keep pressing Place Order button for COD, client use KNET as other payment method, and for that method after creating an order page is redirect to collect Payment details avoiding error thrown by plugin.

  3. I also asked client to contact customer and get confirmation about the issue if they have pressed Place order button many times and got positive response from customer and they tried 2 or 3 or 4 times to place order with COD and ended up with KNET successfully.

So, My issue is with "WooCommerce PDF Invoice & Packing Slip Generator - by RedefiningTheWeb"
error. I converted those Simple products to Variation and added code that check if variation is avaiable or simple product in plugins as well.

I have not dig more dipper into the plugins code but it seems plugins create PDF while order is created as order is created before collecting the Payment.

Hope this might help someone!

Curious how moving off PayPal went for you on this issue? I'm experiencing this same problem and also am using PayPal (it's not the primary gateway but it's an option). Did removing PayPal fix it for you?

Is anyone here using AWS having this issue? If you are, I have your fix.

@mhurrell Any info on how you fixed this issue in AWS? We have our site setup on an AWS Lightsail instance. Any help would be appreciated. Our customer is not happy.

I wish I had better news, as we move the website from one location to another, and removed 1/3 of the plugins, updated everything until it hurt... and we still got duplicates. 2-3 months of hell. Eventually we moved the site to a digital ocean provider and got 8 CPUs and 32 GB of Ram and it stopped (for now) Now we are rebuilding the website hoping we can shake whatever it is, as we never found the root cause. I realize this is not a good answer, but we did discover that the problems all stem from the lack of resources, since we could not find the issue and nobody at Woo wants to take it seriously we just added more resources. After reading the countless posts on this issue I longer think there is a smoking gun, or one bad plugin. WooCommerce needs to step to the plate work to find a fix. They claim you can do 1000-3000 orders per hour, but we had duplicates at 250 per day. No order should ever get to processing with no payment method. I can understand that the system acts funny under a load, but it doesn't act funny no it just creates duplicates which is even worse.

Hey all!

So in AWS EC2 instances, there is a small, out of the way setting that sets
a timeout limit. This is located in the AWS console, and has nothing to do
with your service SSH instance. Change yours to 120 seconds. Never had a
problem since.

HUGE default issue by amazon. Took me 3 months to figure this out.

Open the Amazon EC2 console at https://console
https://console.aws.amazon.com/ec2/ .

  1. On the navigation pane, under LOAD BALANCING, choose Load Balancers.
  2. Select your load balancer.
  3. On the Description tab, choose Edit idle timeout.
  4. On the Configure Connection Settings page, type a value for Idle
    timeout. ...
  5. Choose Save
