Hello everyone!
Wire Android team invites you to join our beta program to better discover, debug, and fix top issues. This means you’ll get early access to builds containing bug fixes (and sometimes new features).
For the next few weeks we want to focus only on notifications issues. We know there are other bugs, but for now, please report only notifications issues.
If you have notification issues on the latest build (2.39.356), please submit your report(s) only in this thread.
A useful bug report includes:
What is the issue: missing notifications/ delayed notifications/ no notifications at all
Confirm the Wire version affected is 2.39.356: Yes/No
Last Wire version that was not affected by issue (if applicable):
Android OS version:
Custom or stock firmware?

Send the debug logs to android@wire com. Please include a brief description of what happened, and if possible, the time that the event occurred with your time zone (e.g. a message at 08:40am CET did not trigger a notification on the locked screen.)
We will update this thread with details on how to join the beta soon.
@someoneEsle:
Regarding debug logs: Maybe you should add the information, how these can be created?
There is a description in issue #837 and a different one at Wire's support website…
Also: I was a bit confused by the possible issue descriptions. Maybe a clarification would help?
(I personally did not experience any problem until now…)
Hi. Issues with notifications may mean that you only get them when you open the app, or you don't get the notifications but you still see the messages when you open wire, or maybe you don't get the messages at all and you never see the notifications either. We just wrote some examples there.
As for the logs, for this beta you will not need to do what is described in #837. That basically turns on more detailed logging, but it will be turned on by default for this beta.
Ah, ok – thanks for the clarification :+1:

Details: I followed all the recommendations about giving priority to wire notifications and so on. Nothing changes. Other apps drop their notifications properly.
When I re-enter the app (for instance from the open windows manager) or re-open the app, after, say less than a second, it shows the number of new messages next to the name of the conversation.
It also happened with my previous terminal: Huawei P9 lite, but I cannot retrieve all the data of the questionnaire.
@sportoles, thank you for your feedback!

Could you, please, provide Google Play Service version instead of Google Play Store version?
Hi guys, has anyone experienced any (out of the ordinary) notification issues after updating yesterday?
I'm still not receiving notifications on the new version.

Hey everyone,
how have notifications been since updating to 2.42.364? If you still have problems, please try Settings>Advanced>Reset Push Notifications Token and let us know whether doing that helps or not. Thanks!
I saw there was an update today, and I haven't really used it yet, but yesterday we were on 3.0.366 and some notifications just never arrive until we actually open the app.... hours later.
Resetting the token did not help.
Same here :-( .
Thanks for reporting. Can you please give us more information though?

This weekend was once again really bad concerning delayed notifications, after several weeks without discernible problems. Is it worth joining the beta? Is disabling battery optimisations still a suggested workaround?

Custom or stock firmware? Custom Resurrection Remix
Google Play Services version: no GooglePlay, MicroG
Phone model/manufacturer: Samsung S4 mini and Samsung S7
Network type (EDGE/LTE/Wi-Fi/Offline): all
Both Samsungs have a similar setup. For the S4 I had battery optimisations disabled, for the S7 not. Until this weekend on both phones Wire seemed to work rather reliable. But on this weekend several notifications were not displayed at all until starting Wire or arrived hours late.
The strange thing is that MicroG, which I use instead of GooglePlay, says that Wire received a push message at the correct time (you can see the last time an app received a push message in MicroG's settings). However, Wire does not react to it, or too late.
I now resetted the token, but I don't now why the old token should have been invalidated.
@Larx interesting, so you say that Wire received a push message at the right time, but failed to show a notification? Have you noticed if Wire ever misses your messages entirely? (As in, messages are not received even if you open the app?)
We just released a new beta that should be promoted to public tomorrow (assuming nothing breaks). If you could monitor the situation and let us know how it goes in a few days, that'd be great. Thanks!
Yes, according to MicroG Wire has received a push message at the right time. There is just no notification.
I also had Wire loosing messages completely, but this was only in a situation when the phone was offline. See me bug #1101, which you just closed ;-).
Hi,
I have the same issue. The Android app is unreliable when it comes to notifications.
I usually use the Wire desktop (latest Appimage (32bit) for Linux on latest Debian stable) and on my phone. And the Desktop notifications are reliable, while I don't always get notifications on my phone. So the messages are getting delivered to me and if I open the Android app I can see the messages as well, but I don't get any notification. Usually if I recently opened Wire on Android I get notifications, but after a while (about an hour up to 4-5 hours) I don't get the notifications. Right after an Android restart I usually get notifications, but they stop after a while.
My phone:
Galaxy G900F
Android: LineageOS 14.1 (Android 7.1.2)
No GApps installed
Wire: 3.3.374 (APK downloaded from website), battery optimization is deactivated for Wire
I don't have theses issues with Conversations, Telegram, Threema or K-9 Mail.
If I can provide more information that would be helpful, just let me know.
@someoneEsle: Are there plans to open beta tests to users without a Play Store account? Since WebSocket instances seem to be affected too (or more so?) they'd need do be tested as well, right?
Been having issues with notifications, so I tried the token reset option and it seems to work for now, in that messages are shown as having arrived on the app icon and there is a notification in the status bar. However there is no notification sound. Seems similar to issue #1210 though that bug is now closed.
What is the issue: No notification sound
Wire version: 3.3.374

Android OS version: 7.1.2 (MIUI 9.1)
Custom or stock firmware? Stock
Google Play Services version: None

Network type (EDGE/LTE/Wi-Fi/Offline): Wi-Fi
Same as @mmwelt here on a brand new Huawei Mate 10 Pro. Vibrations and screen notification work fine on both lock screen and home screen but no notification sound at all. FYI, all other instant messangers play sound notifications just fine.
What is the issue: No notification sound (screen notifications work fine)
Wire version: 3.3.374
Last Wire version that was not affected by issue (if applicable):
Android OS version: 8.00.0 (EMUI 8.0.0)
Custom or stock firmware? Stock
Google Play Services version: default (Nov 25, 2017)
Phone model/manufacturer: Huawei Mate 10 Pro, BLA-L29 model, BLA-L29 8.0.0.115 (C432) build
Network type (EDGE/LTE/Wi-Fi/Offline): any (3G, 4G, Wi-Fi)
Huawei battery management options: all set manual and no optimization for Wire
Wire Settings>Options>Sounds is set to "All"
PS: I also noticed that notifications are not sent to my FR935 smartwatch (no sound or vibrartion) even if Garmin Connect is configured to send notifications from Wire.
It's actually worse than I thought since on first boot I won't get any single notification be it vibration or screen. I have to manually start Wire once to get any past notifications or messages.
As far as doze/optimizations, Wire is setup as other services such as Pushover or Telegram: Manual start with automatic launch and backgroud execution enabled. While the lack of sound notification was somewhere manageable not receiving any message at all is going to be really problematic because I won't necessarily remember to start Wire on each boot. I hope there will be fix soon. Thanks.
@alphazo have you looked at our FAQ page?
Hi @someoneEsle, I went trough the FAQ. While the autostart seems to be working now I still haven't found a way to get any kind of sound notification on incoming messages. This makes me miss a large number of instant messages. I also noticed that no notification (sound, visual, vibration) is received on my Garmin watch even if Wire has been added as notification source to Garmin connect.
Official (but not deployed yet) Huawei firmware BLA-L29 8.0.0.126 (C432) fixed my sound notification issue.
A friend of mine still has those issues:

That issue is really bothering and makes us consider changing the messenger as it consistently reappears since 2016.
Notifications have become absolutely reliable for me since the latest updates! Only the battery drain #853 is sill an issue, though I think it's slightly better now.

some of my contacts reported issues getting notified/receiving new messages in Android and iOS devices with latest wire app version too. Personally I got no issues. They told me ping would be received.
This issue is perennial. I've been reporting it for years and nothing has ever been done. If Telegram can do it, maybe take a look at their client codebase?
the notification issue seems to be primarily on Huawei devices. don't know why.
I’m on MIUI here. Notifications do not work at all, if Wire is not open in the background. All app restrictions (notifications, energy, auto start, lockscreen) are off.
WhatApp, Signal, Telegram, Keybase, Slack are working fine. Would love to switch to Wire, but this issue is a total stopper right now.
It's tragic because Wire the team doesn't seem to know or care that users won't use their service if no one is alerted. This bug has existed for years on both iOS and Android. Nothing has been done.
