Wire-android: Add support for a TOR connection using Orbot Proxy application

Created on 9 Apr 2017  路  5Comments  路  Source: wireapp/wire-android

Please add a support for a TOR connection using pre-installed Orbot Proxy application. I.e. user in options will be able to select connection using a TOR proxy (Orbot).

This option is available in ChatSecure, Antox (Tox) and so on.

Sure, but I think that it is better to make a support as proxy like it is made in ChatSecure or Antox (Tox), native support in the app. VPN mode (as I think) is a not a good idea.

With Orbot you can select which apps you want to be rerouted through the TOR network -- if you put Wire in that list, its traffic will go through TOR. I am not sure I understand why other apps have the toggle in the settings -- does it wake up Orbot in case it's not running when the app launches?

Also, in my experience routing Wire through TOR affects its usability dramatically: although texts/images are fine, calling and video calling is almost impossible because of the reduced speed.

I found "Select Apps" in Orbot options, thank you. But how can I be sure (without root access) that it will redirect all connections without native support from the Wire app?

Moreover, as I see, Orbot make it possible only as VPN mode? Not just as proxy connection, like in case if there is a native support from the app.

For me and a lot of guys texts is enough for encryption. Wire is an app that can be used instead of Signal (that asks a phone number to make an account and ask a contact lists to use it, and does not support Tor/Orbot too from the box).

That's an interesting question, but I think the people at orbot are more likely to know the answer to that question than the developers at wire.

Telegram for alll platforms (Desktop, iOS, Android) now support SOCKS5 proxy from really beginning of application start. I.e. it may be used with the TOR. It is a native support for the application without any additional tools or even "hacks". You just specify in settings: 127.0.0.1, 9050. And it is working perfect. I think it is required to analyze that practice and do more user-friendly decision.
