as a marketer, i want a specific landing page for python, so i can better target consumers

this landing page should show recent python-related issues on it and talk about how many issues are available for python

bounty

submit a design showing a landing page, but with an emphasis on python
you may work off of the current landing page at https://gitcoin.co/ (in fact, this is preferred.. you may only really need to change one or two modules and some copy)

I was interested in this bounty but I had some questions first.

1) How do I identify if someone is a python user or not? While I realize this is probably out of the scope of this task, if we will never have the ability to tell if someone is a python user then this task will provide no benefit.
2) This seems to me like it should be more of a general improvement to the current landing page than a completely different landing page that has to do with a specific topic. I think the real issue here is finding a way to display relevant issues to anyone on the homepage, regardless of what their tech stack of choice is. I also do think it would be a good idea to show current issues on the homepage, they give a really good idea of what the website is actually about. "help grow opensource" isn't really that clear of a message to me. Solve this open source issue and be paid for it is much clearer. Maybe it could use a bit of a re-scope before someone works on it?

You can assume that'll be handled upstream, as in, the user will be sent to a custom landing page a la https://gitcoin.co/landing/<keyword> where keyword == python

his seems to me like it should be more of a general improvement to the current landing page than a completely different landing page that has to do with a specific topic.

agree, thats why the issue desc says "you may work off of the current landing page at https://gitcoin.co/"

I also do think it would be a good idea to show current issues on the homepage, they give a really good idea of what the website is actually about.

agree

"help grow opensource" isn't really that clear of a message to me. Solve this open source issue and be paid for it is much clearer.

my personal perspective is that the mission is meant to be broad, wheras the specific use case "Solve this open source issue and be paid for" it is much more narrow / clearer. i feel like this section of the landing page adequately covers the 'clearer' portion : http://bits.owocki.com/0t2a1f1E0m3f/Screen%20Shot%202018-03-20%20at%201.31.19%20PM.png

Maybe it could use a bit of a re-scope before someone works on it?

i think that if we both understand teh scope as an augmentation of the current landing page as oposed to a new ladning page, there isnt really a need for re-scope

@owocki I somewhat agree with @GaretWebster's comment on a general improvement to the current landing page rather than a specific landing page.

But, if we really need a targetted landing page then we could just come up with a templatized copy from the current one.
For eg: The current sub-text says
Gitcoin is the easiest way to monetize or incentivize work in Open Source Software.

We could templatize into
Gitcoin is the easiest way to monetize or incentivize your {tech} in Open Source Software.

leading to
Gitcoin is the easiest way to monetize or incentivize your python skills in Open Source Software.

Would this be sufficient or you'd be needing a detailed specific version of the landing page for marketing?
With this approach, we'd be knocking out a generally improved version of the current landing page as well as a templatized targetted landing page.

@GaretWebster let me know if you have already started or will be interested in doing this.
If not, I could take a jab at this.

this landing page should show recent python-related issues on it and talk about how many issues are available for python

i think that we can't lose sign of this requirement. this is really the only new module that is needed, everything else is, as you noted, copy changes.

Got it. Will wait for @GaretWebster to respond since he called dibs on this first.

I didn't call dibs

__Please work together__ and coordinate delivery of the issue scope. Gitcoin doesn't know enough about everyones skillsets / free time to say who should work on what, but we trust that the community is smart and well-intentioned enough to work together. As a general rule; if you start work first, youll be at the top of the above list ^^, and should have 'dibs' as long as you follow through.

On the above list? Please leave a comment to let the funder (@owocki) and the other parties involved what you're working, with respect to this issue and your plans to resolve it. If you don't leave a comment, the funder may expire your submission at their discretion.

I've started work on this. Was bit busy lately with other work. But, will try to knock out the first draft over this weekend.

looking fwd to it

@owocki
Here's my take on this: Gitcoin Python landing page

Kept it simple and similar to the existing landing page. I've cleaned up the design a bit and removed few elements which I thought wouldn't be necessary for this one.

Here's the generic structure of the landing page which I've kept:

  • Hero section with supporting text targeting Python developers
  • Explaining what is Gitcoin
  • Explaining how Gitcoin works
  • CTA button
  • TLDR
  • Clients and testimonials
  • Newsletter signup form
  • Press
  • Footer

I've kept the copy similar to the existing one. Didn't find the need for changing specifically to target Python as the generic ones conveyed pretty much the same. Probably you can suggest an alternate copy if required.

Let me know your thoughts.

thanks for doing this! looks cleaner than our current landing page :)

any thoughts on working in this requirement?

this landing page should show recent python-related issues on it and talk about how many issues are available for python

hey @PixelantDesign im curious what you think here

Oops. I might have missed that!

Here's the updated one: https://invis.io/D8GPKB34P3B

  • Added an "Explore Python issues" CTA button with the number of Python bounties as a notification bubble in the hero section which redirects to the issue explorer page with Python bounties pre-filtered
  • I've added few Python bounties after the "Explaining how Gitcoin works section" which I felt is the relevant place to put.

I'm open to shuffling the sections i.e show the bounties before talking about Gitcoin or any in other way.

@owocki what is the one thing we would like users to do while they are here?

Looking good @nitinrgupta! I think there is room for a little bit more creative freedom while staying inline with the brand.

Would it be possible to try a version with the following changes?

  • H1 font use Futura, Muli for body copy ( see creative repo under UI KIt or reach out to me!)
  • Remove the top navigation
  • Is the 45 number on the Explore issues button a count? Could we try it in line with the text? Where does this button link to? The bottom of the landing page with the 4 python issues shown or does it take a user to the issue explorer with python tasks filtered?
  • How does it work - could we try the headers a little larger? Same size as 'what is gitcoin' headers.
  • Check sentence case consistency on headers across the page
  • Who's Using Gitcoin - I'd love to see the icons larger since we have the space and a new format for testimonials.
  • Press section - are these icons clickable? They seem deactivated being all gray. If not meant to be clickable, maybe it needs a light background treatment to anchor the different size squares or try knocked out white.
  • We should probably have a get started CTA at the bottom of the page above the footer as well. Something like this could be nice (obviously our copy would read differently and we wouldn't have contact sales):

Let me know if you have any questions!

@PixelantDesign Do Muli and Futura work well together ?

@owocki what is the one thing we would like users to do while they are here?

sign up, or do a bounty.

@nitinrgupta how are the pixelant changes coming along?

Hey @PixelantDesign
Here's the updated design: https://invis.io/E8GVXFGG9FR

Below are my thoughts on your feedback

  • H1 font use Futura, Muli for body copy ( see creative repo under UI KIt or reach out to me!)

Done

  • Remove the top navigation

I'm not sure why you suggested this. But removed it.

  • Is the 45 number on the Explore issues button a count? Could we try it in line with the text? Where does this button link to? The bottom of the landing page with the 4 python issues shown or does it take a user to the issue explorer with python tasks filtered?

Yes this will link to the issue explorer page with python tasks filtered. But we could do either way. Link it to the bottom section as well.

  • How does it work - could we try the headers a little larger? Same size as 'what is gitcoin' headers.

I did not use the same size as 'what is gitcoin' headers just to create the heirarchy. But, used a slightly larger version than I used earlier.

  • Check sentence case consistency on headers across the page

Just copied over the content from existing page 😆

  • Who's Using Gitcoin - I'd love to see the icons larger since we have the space and a new format for testimonials.

Done

  • Press section - are these icons clickable? They seem deactivated being all gray. If not meant to be clickable, maybe it needs a light background treatment to anchor the different size squares or try knocked out white.

It should be the same way how it is currently. On hover, the colors will be visible.

  • We should probably have a get started CTA at the bottom of the page above the footer as well. Something like this could be nice (obviously our copy would read differently and we wouldn't have contact sales)

I'm not sure we need it again above the footed. The news letter signup is right above the previous section. Having it again would feel too many CTA tbh. But you can take a call anyways.

Also, here's the sketch file for my design: .sketch Feel free to modify if any other changes are required.

@nitinrgupta would you mind clicking 'star work' on the gitcoin issue ?

Done.

Hi @nitinrgupta Thanks for all of the updates!
I tried a few changes with your sketch file, what do you think of these additions?

python landing page 3 2x

cc: @owocki @vs77bb would love your copy magic here.

i find the yellow in the middle slightly overwhelming..

happy to take a pass at copy -- maybe in a google doc?

@PixelantDesign I agree with @owocki.
I think reducing the opacity of those backgrounds should do the trick. It's a good idea to differentiate and have colored sections.

Also, in the new blue section with the icons and having the text showing on hover states might not be a good idea. It creates a lot of abstraction.

@PixelantDesign ok to payout?

@PixelantDesign i can create a bounty to code up this landing page if it's a priority for us.. donno if we want to bounty the funder ftux landing page first though..

@owocki yep, lets pay out! I agree on prioritizing funder ftux work.

  • ‘Claim the issue on Gitcoin... ‘ → ‘Commit to an issue on Gitcoin by clicking ‘Start Work’ on the Issue’s Detail page.’
  • ‘Available bounties to level up your Python Skills’ ---> ‘Available bounties to grow your python skills’
  • I really like the section at the bottom with the different ways repo maintainers are using Gitcoin! Great work.
