Vscode: Allow to configure icons for menu items

Created on 9 Jul 2018  Â·  9Comments  Â·  Source: microsoft/vscode

Hey,

after searching over an hour on the interwebz, Stack Overflow, etc. it seems there is no other possibility than open an issue. I don‘t want to take your sparse time, but it seems that topic don‘t exist anywhere. Nothing. Nowhere.

Why has VS Code no menu icons or the possibility to add menu icons (main menu, context menus) ?

I get that we can add icons for files in the file explorer. And i get that it seems like a design descission to have no menu icons, since it seems so completely normal, that nobody at all is even talking about it. That makes me very courios.

In my (and other real life guys) oppinion it makes VSC ugly, less intuitive and less customizable. Since symbolics let human brains better remember where is what and therefore better interact with UI‘s. And it looks way more complete and diversed instead everything is grey, empty and you can‘t differ one menu entry from another, in a quick look.

So plz, can anyone tell me, why this is so? Is this a design descission? Am i completely blind or why is no one talking about that stuff anywhere? Is it discussed to add menu icons in a future version?

Any input about that topic is very appreciated.

It would be great to have icons in custom menus (and they're now the default ones).

Thanks for creating this issue! We figured it's covering the same as another one we already have. Thus, we closed this one as a duplicate. You can search for existing issues here. See also our issue reporting guidelines.

Happy Coding!

@bpasero

Would be great to ADD that issue that is a duplicate, instead just telling me to use the saerch. Even more so, when i told you, i already searched. So, which issue ? Where ?

Srsly, are you kidding me ?

I already tried to find something out of here, and i tried it again:

https://github.com/Microsoft/vscode/issues?utf8=✓&q=menu+icons+

So, where ???

And as a small side note:

Even when missusing an issue, when it is a duplicate, and whatever, it is really a shame, to just spit in some autogenerated message and closing a topic without any given words, when someone asked for at least ANY input. Obviously i have to call it the „Microsoft way“ of handling things. And that, shortly after MS has changed their behaviours so nicely. Yes, i know VSC isnt‘t MS. But such a behaviour really don‘t give me the feeling the devs really want to help or have any interessts in their community. Or in short: This stinks to me like „nothing has changed“. So, thx for nothing.

Sorry I misunderstood the issue, I thought this was about configuring icons for actions. Let me reopen and rephrase, I do not think there is a duplicate.

Thx for the answer and for reopening.

While this is a fair move, i still ask myself the above questions. Would be nice if someone can give me a quick answer, if

a)
setting icons for menus is not possible at the moment (the changed title implies that a bit) ?

b)
setting icons for menus is possible, where i can do that ?

Best regards

@MBODM It is not currently possible to add menu icons to the application menu or context menus. With the new custom menus on Windows and Linux, this feature could be implemented, but this has not yet been discussed.

Hey!

Any news on this? I'd love to help, and maybe code a solution or a plugin...
It really bugs me that it took me more than a few months of using this amazing editor to only now find the feature "Reveal in Sidebar", when I think it would have been easier if an icon (https://material.io/resources/icons/?search=maps&icon=my_location&style=baseline) was present along the name, like the provided screen shot above, by @usernamehw ...

Given that there is no way to add icons to native menus and that it would only work on Windows/Linux (which would create inconsistencies), I don't think this is something we will do anytime soon. Will close this as out-of-scope and if we ever re-visit this in the future we can re-open. Thanks for the feedback.
