I download VScode's update patch when I was coding , and then shut down the computer and forgot to update it.
Next day I turn the computer on and can't find VScode anywhere , all the file was empty.

Let's try to detect if the system is about to be shutdown, we don't do anything.

Sounds like you told it to install the patch "Later". So after the reboot it messed up patching. I've had this happen to me about 2-3 times now. Except I tell it to update immediately, it gets halfway and then fails.

That's the updater log.
There was no Error, only Delete.

Hey @joaomoreno, I've also faced the problem when VS Code decided to update on Windows shutdown, which resulted in the next boot having no VS Code installed on the system. Had to download and install it again 😢

I just had this issue also. Visual Studio wanted to update on Windows shutting down. Now there is no VS Code installed on the computer.

Edit: After reinstalling VS Code to same directory all my extensions are working and code I was working on last loaded right where I left off thankfully... 😅

Happened to me today.
Logging in after 'Shutdown anyway' and there's no code editor.

Happened to me as well. My issue was that I needed to restart VS because I was (I think) having Typescript issues. I closed it, and restarted it (apparently too fast because the old process was still running) and boom, it was gone (no machine restart).

Happened to me today.
Logging in after 'Shutdown anyway' and there's no code editor.

Same thing happend to me.

Same here,

I received a warning on exit that it was unable to update due to some locked file. Tried the "try again" button twice and then pressed "Cancel". After that, no VS Code on my computer anymore.

Similar issue yesterday. Vscode wanted to update an automatic update, computer slowed down to a halt for a second, update failed and rebooted explorer.exe. Now vscode is no longer on my system.

Then it ends there

Just as a comment for those who had the same issue, when I reinstalled
(yes, quite bothersome) VSCode all my extensions, configs and keybindings
where there.
So, even though this error/unexpected behavior is pretty inconvenient, it's
not *THAT *critical I'd say.

@NOMADE55 Just to clarify, you think a piece of software _uninstalling itself_ during a supposed update cycle is not a critical issue? If a piece of software I wrote _uninstalled itself_ when it was supposed to be _improving itself_ I would panic and fix it immediately - this is the kind of bug I consider unacceptable and would actually switch IDEs over.

@dudewad No, I'm just an user of this IDE, so my message was sort of a message for other users like me who might think they've lost everything. I'm do not participate actively on this repo nor I think my message would stop any active debugging of this issue.

I've had this happen many times on multiple machines. Windows shutting down forcefully for updates and such, killing the VSCode updater. Usually this happens when I leave my computer on and IT pushes patches in the middle of the night. VSCode saves my work, but it can't save itself from pending destruction!

I'm not sure why this is a problem that isn't already fixed (as this issue was opened over a year ago). It seems that the update process does the following:

  1. Uninstall the current version
  2. Install the new version
  3. Update shortcuts?

Instead it should be doing this:

  1. Install the new version
  2. Uninstall the current version
  3. Update shortcuts?

That way it's not possible for it to be put in a bad state if the update is interrupted. Worst case scenario is that it is still pointing to the old version and it prompts you to update again. No biggie.

By contrast, I find myself having to go out to code.visualstudio.com often to redownload and reinstall Code Insiders. Not a good use of my time, running through the installer every time my computer reboots.

Wow, mine also just disappeared. Perhaps this should be an atomic process somehow?

Hi there. The same issue occured for me as of today. I shut down my PC yesterday, had a popup opened with information I didn't get to read, this morning the programm was completely gone.

This issue happens to me once every couple of days. It has something to do with an update checker I think

This has happened to me twice now on Windows 10 Pro.
When I go into "Apps & Features" I see it there.
image

Yet it is nowhere to be found. It seems to happen after a system reboot.
Can't say I've ever had a piece of software uninstall itself multiple times unprompted.

I have just had the same issue, my apps&features shows it there (though the icon is missing) . This is the second time it's gone missing.

It is clear that this is a problem with the auto updater. As it always happens when a new version is released, a workaround would be disabling the auto updates (forgot the steps but google should provide an answer)

Just got the same problem too, vsc was lost but also were other programs (git, mathematica, pyzo, ...).
I shut down vsc while it was trying to update (but can't understand why it uninstalled the other programs)

This has just occurred to my friend, Visual Studio deleted itself.

FYI, I think the triage priority of this is severely off. I switched IDEs after this issue occurred to me. @joaomoreno why is this not considered a priority zero issue, given that the application _deletes itself_?

Happened to me on Friday, how is this issue still open after more than one year...

Happened to me today

I can't find a vscode-inno-updater.log file anywhere
Looking in the following directory, I can see the basic folder structure but a lot of the folders seem empty and there is no Code.exe:
C:\Users\user\AppData\Local\ProgramsMicrosoft VS Code

There is however a directory in there with the name '_' (a single underscore). This has a much more fleshed out folder structure, and the Code.exe file

When I run that Code.exe file VSCode opens fine with all extensions installed and settings remembered. It also opened the update notes as well.

Same here !!

This just happened for as well.

The first I noticed something was wrong was when the pinned app icon on the task bar lost it's icon. When I clicked on the icon to 'launch' the app I was presented a Windows shortcut is broken dialog.

When I searched for Visual Studio Code in Windows search it temporarily display in results, then launched, but then I was presented the same Windows shortcut is broken dialog.

The icon eventually unpinned itself from the task bar and now the app has completely disappeared from my PC. However, VSC still seems to be showing in Add Remove Programs.

Uploading VSC.Add.Remove.Programs.jpg…

Happened to me as well, and VS Code website download link is broken. Never thought I wouldn't be able to code because of an IDE

Just happened to me, not on shutdown though. Was there one minute and now it's gone.

Happened overnight to me

Yesterday this happened to me. I started VSCode in the afternoon and used it for several hours. Then exited the application and shutdown my system. When I started my system today VSCode was uninstalled.

Windows 10
VSCode 1.41
Installed in User space

Belows are all the entries from the "AppData\Roaming\Code\logs\20200206T154141\main.log"

It seems interesting that the logs show I had automatic updates disabled but did the download and started the updates. There was a folder created "AppData\Local\ProgramsMicrosoft VS Code_" with the data time stamp that matches the log entry below where I can see the files for the update. There are several other folders under "AppData\Local\ProgramsMicrosoft VS Code\resources" folder and some of its subfolders (not all of them) that have an updated date time stamp that matches my shutdown time AND there are no files in this entire folder tree.

Maybe the bug is in the update code that fails to check or honor the "disable update setting" and downloads the update and uninstalls VSCode but then does check the setting and does not complete the install action.

I had this issue happen to me as well. Friday 7 Feb 2020 an update was made available. I turned off the computer. Started the computer again and found no Visual Studio Code as if it uninstalled itself. I downloaded the latest version today 10 Feb 2020 and had this error code present "The terminal process terminated with exit code: {0}"
Windows 10 pc

In addition to the application deleting itself, the terminal becomes unavailable after re-instillation. :|

@joaomoreno this issue is assigned to you by @roblourens but your last activity on this issue was a year ago. Would please take some action to move this along or remove yourself from the assignment so that someone else might pick it up? Right now it's just gathering comments.

As stated in previous comments this bug does not cause the application to stop working or slow down but uninstall itself. How is this sitting in the backlog almost 2 years after it was first reported?

@RjKGitHub Unfortunately there just hasn't been any developments over here.

POSSIBLE WORKAROUND

Well, I've noticed it twice now as well. For me, the ./bin directory that contains code.exe got renamed to '_' and an empty bin directory got created. I put the original back (or maybe I moved the files into _ and renamed it back, I forget) and it seemed to work fine. I've verified that the resulting code.exe file does have the new date and version resource, and it does display the latest release notes when run, so I would suspect the bug is lurking in the final code at the end of the auto-update process.

And yes, I'm always leaving my system on overnight, so it does that. Annoying, but I have come to expect it. I'd love to see a solution, though.

Hey @joaomoreno! I had this problem also yesterday on Windows 10.
I write this comment only to increase the priority of this issue to VSCode support. People suffer.
Can you, please, do something?

Same problem here and not for the first time - i did a regular restart of my machine (Windows 10) and upon return, vscode was missing. Like @Kmilka, i just want to raise awareness and make sure this goes high on the priority list. I had to postpone a code presentation since i couldn't display/debug my code which I had planned to do in vscode. This is a frustrating hick-up in this otherwise AWESOME tool ...

Same thing happend to me 3 times.

The is because of failure update. I got this issue, then downloaded and installed by myself. Problem solved

This happened to me today (on Windows 10 v1909). Strange to have a program auto-delete itself. But it took me 20 seconds to reinstall it.

Same issue over here.

Maybe this should help someone:
My problem:
I had a odd problem, VSC just disappeared from my PC. I couldn't find any VSC file or folder. I tried to uninstall VSC, but even there I couldn't find it. Then I downloaded and opened the installation file from code.visualstudio.com. When the installation was ending, a message popped up "Access denied".
My solution:
First I changed the hidden folders to visible like in this tutorial:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBteQswtPI0
Then I went in: C:\Users{My_win10_username}\AppData\Local\Programs
then folder -> Microsoft VS Code
I deleted the folder and installed again the newest Visual Studio Code.
That worked!

I hope that this will help someone in the future :)

This happened 2x to me this week again! This program is frustrating to use. It's smells like the installation on the user directory proves problematic with the updater. I have VS installed as an admin on the computer and again, when an update comes around, EVEN THOUGH I'VE DISABLED THE AUTO-UPDATES, the update performs. When i attempt to reinstall, i get messages about not having permissions on the computer. Here's an example "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, etc....." the file path is the user directory not the system. Can this get fixed please?!

Happened to me on mac in middle of an meeting. I can't find vscode in my mac anymore..

I had this happen to me just today (Apirl 8th 2020) just as an update that this bug has happened recently.

happenned to me just now. I just needed to restart my laptop without closing (or had I closed it? I forgot) then it just disappeared. need your help on this one please

happened to me today (April 14th 2020) on Windows 10. After a shutdown VS Code was completely gone.

Happened to me just now, also Apr 14 2020 - closed VS Code, auto-updater began, something in the auto-updater failed. Then Code was inaccessible. After restart, it was completely gone. Poof.

Happened to me today. Yesterday vscode was installed and available. After my boot this morning, vscode is gone.

This is still an ongoing problem. I started my computer 10 minutes before a code review with one of my students to find VS Code (Version 1.44.1 on Windows 10.0.18363 Build 18363) had vanished. This is disruptive to my work, as I was frantically reinstalling VS while conducting the review.

This happened to me today.

Happened to me today. Turning on my laptop to start coding and vscode is completely gone.
That was quite a shock.

Luckily after reinstalling everything works as before, but now I am really dubious how can such a major bug be open so long? I mean the program deletes itself how is this not the top priority bug?

System info:
Dell Xps 13
Windows 10

Happened to me today as well.

System info:
HP Omen 2018
Windows 10 Home

jesus guys.

Happened to me just now.

I've had it happen at least 5 or 6 times in the past few months. Am reinstalling again now, but this is getting old.
Win 10
Dell XPS i9

Same here, keeps happening.

Visual Studio Code was removed automatically on MS Windows 10 Education Version 1909 Build 18363.778.

It's a sign from the gods.

Happened to me as well a few months ago on Windows 7. I rebooted and my icon would not boot VScode. It turned out it had actually moved my installation to a different location, but the behavior was odd so I overwrote the installation. Unfortunately I don’t have any screenshots or notes from that event.

please lock this thread

GitHub issue etiquette lesson for all:

Please do not comment on an issue unless you are providing information of value to resolution of the issue. "Me too" comments add no value, and should be indicated by 👍 reactions to the issue itself (not the comments, though reacting to comments is of course fine on its own.)

This is typically a good rule of thumb for all GitHub issues on all GitHub repositories.

I am not a Microsoft employee, just someone tired of seeing "me too" comments whenever Hacker News links to a GitHub issue.

I stopped using vscode because of this. It's happened at least 5 times that I narrowed down the problem to be on my machine as either a non-admin user issue when updating or some other electron app such as [f.lux, postman, ...n] that is running parallel unrelated to vscode that makes it fail during the update. The update process is highly flawed in any case.

  • DELETE ALL APP FILES FIRST FROM INSTALL DIR
  • INSTALL EVERYTHING AGAIN FROM SCRATCH

"Oh Access Denied? Sorry we deleted everything already. In the meantime reinstall everything all over again manually, disable automatic updates and let's hope it doesn't happen again!"

😤 Imagine having to reinstall settings and extensions from scratch every time vscode decides it wants to update and fail at it. No thanks.

Just happened to me again, should I just stop updating VS Code

The solution is to convert your installation over to Portable mode, per Microsoft's instructions here. It's pretty simple to do.

Then when a new update ZIP file comes in, you just extract it to a folder next to the one your old one is in (mine was in C:\Users\Mike\AppData\Local\ProgramsMicrosoft VS Code"), then move the data subfolder from the old to the new, swap the names around, and you should be good to go.

I also had this happen to me. In my case, I had resources\ThirdPartyNotices.txt from the Microsoft VS Code folder open in a different editor when the auto-update triggered.

Because it was open, the auto-updater failed during uninstallation:
May 27 13:05:24.079 ERRO The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. (os error 32)

This has left me in a state where Visual Studio Code is no longer installed.

(Considering that I received no prompt for auto-update, this would seem to suggest that there's no safe time to ever read any of the license documentation without being at risk for VS Code deleting itself out from underneath you...)

yup, happens to me often also seem the only way to get it back is to complete re-installed VS code.

re-installed 3 times now, so will be using another code editor until this issue is resolved.

happened to me today, I had shutdown my laptop while it was updating and now I don't have vs code anymore

I also have the same error. I installed vs code with user mode not for all users, when I close vs code suddenly a message appears, an error for the update and my vs code disappears. but when I reinstall vs code with user mode again I can open my vs code, but when I close it the error is the same.

and I go to the installation directory my vs code in
"C:\Users\Abdurozzaq NH\AppData\Local\ProgramsMicrosoft VS Code"

but Code.exe is in
"C:\Users\Abdurozzaq NH\AppData\Local\ProgramsMicrosoft VS Code_" - the right directory.

So actually my code vs was not erased, but I don't know why Code.exe changed the path. not the same as in the shortcut link

I'm looking forward to friday. Should we meet somewhere to celebrate the anniversary of this issue? 🎉 🎉

First comment after 2nd anniversary of this. :) it happened to me as well.

Happened to me too nice

Same thing

It happened to me as well 4 to 5 times as I fed up as hell, but after searching a lot, I saw this solution on any other github issue that updated failed when any other program used vs code in background, somehow Skype used it (don't know how but it does) 😕
But these steps worked for me..!! 😃

when update failed and retry dialog appears, follow these steps:
1- quit skype
2- open task manager, kill all processes/services related to skype
3- back to dialog, and click "retry"

hope it hepls! 🥰

Hey I solved my issue by stop using vscode, ok bye.

In all seriousness it's not a critical issue. It's going to keep popping up every time windows updates or your computer reboots while vscode is doing it's update. All user settings and plugins are not removed, it's just an inconvenience for people who like to leave their computer running or sleeping over shutting it down.

There seems to be no interest of fixing it, either.

The fact that Microsoft, a multi billion dollar company, haven't managed to fix this issue for two years, should be testament to why you should just use another IDE. See you all in a year for the 3rd anniversary 👍

That is the worst issue ever. A software that deletes itself. 💯

This just happened to me as well. Still no fix?

Same, time to reinstall I guess.
Although the extensions are still in .vscode folder so, not as bad ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Happened to me too. Installed it on my VM. Next time my machine was rebooted there's no VS Code.

happened to me too

This just happened this morning, Insider started, but then failed to do my typical Remote SSH... and upon closing the program it uninstalled itself! WTF

Happend to me as well.

Same. As pointed above when reinstalling extensions were back in place, so that's something I guess

Happened to me today.
Here is log file vscode-inno-updater-1598402422.log

Second month in a row of it happening.

WTF, why VS Code disappeared? He himself could not leave because the uninstaller remained in place in the control panel.
This is some kind of mistake, Bill Gates solve this problem, otherwise I will no longer use your buggy programs.

vscode not found on reboot. today I downloaded and reinstalled the version I had already updated to.

Had this happen to me today. Interestingly enough running code . in WSL would launch VSCode just fine, but I can't launch it normally. Upon starting up from code . it prompted me to update which resulted in an error log pointing out that it can't find code.exe in C:\Program Files\Microsoft VS Code\Code.exe

Still runs when I do code . though.

Happened to me as well, somewhere around in August, and the solution for me was to use the open source version of the software VSCodium, since it does not randomly disappear. As others have confirmed, the program is indeed installed, as it can be found in Control Panel, it just disappears from context menus, taskbar (if it was pinned) etc. This is a bug that should definitely be a top priority, since it happens to quite a few people.

This happened today with me as well. It doesn't get deleted, it just get moved to another directory. By default, it would be located in C:\Users\"your user"\AppData\Local\Programs\Microsoft VS Code\_

first-timer here, this bug it's hilarious.

So as @Al-Himyari said, I've just copied the contents of Microsoft VS Code\_ back into Microsoft VS Code\ and it all worked again .. it also show me the changelog of new updates 😆

It happened to me again today, I'm now on version 1.49.1...

Happened today for me.

happend to me today

My turn. I got it back by copying files back as @pjnovas describes.

I've never seen a piece of software delete itself before. I've had issues with Microsoft software before, but this is a new one. Happened to me today, 2 years after first being reported. Glad to see they've not addressed it. /s

Happened to me today. Can someone edit the top comment and write the quick fix in there?

Something like "Edit: The quick fix to get VSCode back is to go to C:\Users\"your user"\AppData\Local\Programs\Microsoft VS Code\_ and move the content of the _ folder to the Microsoft VS Code folder."

This happened to me today.

@Julian-Wollersberger thanks. Your solution worked.
Got 1.49.3 installed yesterday. After move out of _ folder got 1.50.0 installed.

This happened to me today.

This happened to me today.

Yeah wonderful. It just happened to me.

Just happened to me for the first time.
If you download the newest version and install it manually VS Code seems to behave as if it was never deleted. It reopened my last project, all settings, extensions, etc. are there.
So, yeah, it's a stupid issue, but it's not deleteing any of your previous efforts, so that makes it just a minor inconvenience.

oh man, This happened to me last night and in this morning when im open vscode , boom! where is my vscode gone ! never expected this before...last night i didnt notice vscode updating and close editor then shutdown.

W/o uninstall or install new application :
just move all files in dir _ into \Microsoft VS Code and re-open your vscode, its work

Howdy everyone, so @muhimron90 comment just helped me https://github.com/microsoft/vscode/issues/52855#issuecomment-723381931

Not sure what triggered this, but if you follow his tip, it will save your life.

Happened to me today, followed just moving as commented by @muhimron90 - works like a freaking charm!!! Thanks!
