Vscode: Minimap Enhancement: Show Preview Tooltip

Using VS Code 1.18.1
[This is an idea for a new feature, not an issue]

Visual Studio's enhanced scrollbar allows you to hover the minimap and get a full sized preview of the 7-8 lines under your cursor. I would love to see this feature added to the minimap in VS Code. Or perhaps, as some others have suggested, an API for the minimap so extension developers could add this functionality.

Just wanted to see if there was an update on this feature, this would be a real nice to have in VS Code, it's incredibly useful in Visual Studio 2017.

Although I might add that the minimap itself displays better in VS Code than it does in Visual Studio, the characters render much cleaner

+1, especially if this changes nothing but to make it so that when I mouse over the scrollbar (especially when doing a find-all or some similar fulltext search that highlights a bunch of stuff in the scrollbar) a popup appears that shows me that code region, similar to the "peek" functionality.

This really is the most useful feature of a minimap. Otherwise, useless.

This feature will be really useful. In my opinion this is the only reason to use the minimap (if you have preview) otherwise I don't see the perks of using it.
