Vscode-icons: New extension setting ignored

I have added this to prefs:

"vsicons.associations.files": [
    { "icon": "text", "extensions": ["mac"], "format": "svg" }
],

but I do not get an icon for my xxxx.mac files

Have you tried F1> Icons: Apply Icons Customization?
