It'd be nice to be able to use find to select text to then copy to clipboard.

You can do this with visual mode.
Use / to select some text, then v to enter visual mode, then tweak the selection, the y (or <Enter>) to yank.
(Tip, in visual mode, o to activate the other end of the selection is really useful.)
