As an open source community i think we need to take into consideration those arguments:

Gitter is Open source (under MIT Licence)
Gitter can easily be integrated with github (notifications about new issues,pull requests,versions...)
You don't need an invitation or to be connected to read the feed of a gitter channel

i would love to have a discord chatroom instead of gitter. Way more features and unlimited chat history

@rubiin -- Good point. Let's start with this and then transition as the need grows. Discord is another level for sure!
