1) TST will often inexplicably 'refresh' as if I had just restarted my browser, getting hung up on the 'loading' bar, rendering the add-on unusable. I have to restart my browser. I wouldn't mind this bug so much if I only knew how to force TST to manually restart. For reference, I usually have 25+ tabs open, but I don't know if that has anything to do with the problem.
2) Sometimes when I click on a tab in TST, it will open the tab in a new window, to my frustration. I'm not holding down any keys when I click or anything.
@michaelm2391 you may want to look over the open defects. I think both of these are there in one form or another. (It shouldn't have anything to do with 25+ tabs. Many active users have "hundreds" of tabs ... myself included.)

You can reload TST via the addons manager, with disabling and re-enabling of TST. If it has no effect on your case, Firefox's separate process for addons or something internal system for addons looks to be stopped, and you need to restart Firefox itself.
Anyway, 25 tabs looks not too many. I think there is something special trigger: other addons, webpages loaded in tabs, hardware, or something. I'm happy if you successfully narrow down conditions to reproduce the problem with clean environment. It may be triggered by a bug of Firefox itself like: 1561879 - Sometimes drag operation started in a sidebar contents provided by an addon is immediately canceled on macOS. For a workaround, you can deactivate detaching of tabs via dragging. Steps:
@piroor Can confirm the firefox sidebar bug is happening on Linux too. Somehow has gotten worse recently, used to only happen from time to time, now almost every other time I click on a tab it moves the entire subtree into a new window. Disabling that option you talked about helped a _lot_, but is a little unfortunate too cause I actually like being able to break out the subtrees into new windows sometimes. Thanks for the great extension and all the work you put into it!

@piroor, thank you for the solution

You can remap original drag action into shift + drag:
FireFox -> Add-ons -> Extensions -> Tree Style Tab -> Preferences -> Drag And Drop -> change radiobuttons
Is there a way to disable/re-enable without going through the clicks? ie.
Can I do it in Terminal or in the Firefox URL bar? I'm using Firefox
Developer Edition on Mac OSX 10.12.6.

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1561879. For a workaround,
you can deactivate detaching of tabs via dragging. Steps:
- Go to TST's options page.
- Turn a checkbox "Unlock Expert Options" to checked.
- Under the "Drag and Drop" section, turn the checkbox "Allow to
detach tree dropped outside of the tab bar" to unchecked.—

I would like to add: the problem with tabs suddenly flying into a new window exists on Windows as well.
@michaelm2391 I personally don't use the feature yet but web-ext looks to provide ability to control Firefox from the console.
@twisteroidambassador Drag and drop options described above should work for Windows also.
@michaelm2391 just checking in to see if anything has changed with regards to this item.
It happens less often but I'm still getting long load times at firefox
startup.

Confirming that the freezing issue persists. Started for me about a week ago, happens daily. So far, disabling/re-enabling TST via Firefox's Add-ons menu is an effective fix, though I have to do this frequently.
I'm on a WIndows 64-bit running Windows 10 Home 20H2, build 19042.928
Firefox 88
TST 3.7.4 (2021.3.31)
Yep, I have to wait up to 10 minutes for my firefox to get running on
startup.

Update: Almost immediately after posting my above comment, the disabling/re-enabling trick stopped working: Firefox was having a catastrophic meltdown: tabs were crashing, and I wasn't able to disable or re-enable the TST add-on. The "slider" would sometimes move in the Add-ons menu, but nothing would happen. I deleted and re-installed Firefox, but the problem persisted.
I have a theory: I think this might be related to an interaction between 4 extensions: Cookie Auto-Delete, Multi Account Containers, Google Container, and TST.
I had also edited my CSS to remove tabs on top, I don't think that affected anything, but mentioning it in case.
I've restarted Firefox and disabled Automatic Cleaning in CAD. I've re-enabled all my add-ons _except_ TST, and I've edited my CSS to re-enable tabs on top. So far, Firefox has performed well, with no crashes. I'm going to continue testing and, if this holds, I'll re-enable TST and hope for the best.
@Bout2GitIt FYI: There is a known issue around the accessibility service of Firefox on Windows 10. On some environment, the system can become slow and frozen with high CPU usage of the RPC (Remote Procedure Call) service, when Firefox's accessibility service is active. Indeed I saw such a problem after some hours past from the PC waken up from its sleep, and I had to set accessibility.force_disabled to 1 via about:debugging. If you use no any accessibility software (like screen reader or voice recognition services) disabling Firefox's accessibility feature can become a workaround.
