Teslamate: Crowedsourced data ?

I think it would be neat to crowdsource some Teslamate data like teslafi. Allow people to choose which dashboards they want to send to the cloud. I would throw some money at it to see it happen. I have a webserver with extra resources.

I'm with @tabascoeye. The idea of this project is to keep control over your own data and to be independent from centralized servers. I gladly leave the data sharing and crowdsourcing to the alternatives, like TeslaFi.

isn't part of the idea of teslamate to _not_ share your data in some "cloud" (i.e. other peoples computers)?

while this is true (self governance of your data), I'd also be willing to share some of it - tracking firmware rollouts, supercharger-rates restrictions from applying those etc seems like a great place to start.

I agree with @tabascoeye and @adriankumpf ; the reason I use this and am active here is I can keep my data - sure Tesla already know, which itself doesn't make me too happy but is another matter. :)

Being able to choose to share data vs handing over the key to the car are
different things. Sharing efficiency data, Super charger geo fences, miles
driven, current firmware etc. Obviously not your destination data or
anything like that.

Is it considered to share battery data ? ( and therefore degradation data )

A lot of people stays due Teslafi due to this feature.

There is no technical or legal Security risk in this and adding such feature optional in settings make it possible for the worried to choose not to share.

Datasharing is needed if Teslamate wan’t to step up to the next Level.

The problem is dat each and every Teslamate instance is individual. There is no central point where all Teslamate's instances can sync and communicate with each other about such statistics, or even just to discover each other.

If you'd make something like that, someone needs to cover the costs of hosting such central service.

And even then, how many people would be happy to upload portions of their database to that central server? I went with a self-hosted solution for a reason, it's entirely under my control. I get to manage my data. I am not sure that turning a self-hosted solution into a cloud solution is really a high priority for all users.

Finally, if anything gets TeslaFi blocked by Tesla it's going to be that battery data. As an example of a function to use TeslaMate for, picking the one metric that is most likely to annoy Tesla and cause them to turn the banhammer on the unauthorized use of the unpublished API, that will be it. Most of the new TeslaMate users came from the last time that TeslaFi was blocked by Tesla (along with any number of cloud provider IP ranges), perhaps there is a lesson to be learned here about keeping a low profile to avoid getting cut off from the API?
