Telegram-foss: Extremely High Background Battery Usage

Created on 13 Jan 2021  路  13Comments  路  Source: Telegram-FOSS-Team/Telegram-FOSS

Getting extremely high battery usage, 4min screen on time resulted in 33% of battery loss. Before charging I had about an 45min screen on time and it was 90%.

My second highest app is only around 4% usage.

I would say it is due to websockets, however I don't entirely think that's the case. Especially because none of my other apps are anywhere near as high.
Unless it's due to being in a large amount of groups or channels?

I just spotted high CPU usage from app, is there any logs I can provide to help mitigate this issue?

high battery usage is most of the time high cpu usage. maybe related to #390

Could possibly be, I don't believe I have a built in cpu measurment on my skin, but it is showing Telegram uses 1.4gb of memory which seems to be quite a bit.

Same shit

I'm deleting this for now because it's used almost 50% of battery in 2.5 hours its crazy

if i notice that my phone gets warm, my workaroud is that i force-kill telegram mulitple times (it is always telegram which heats up my phone and drains the battery with a cpu usage of up to 60%). if that does not lead to lesser cpu usage i disable the background connection (settings > notification and sounds > other > background connection) for an hour or a day, after that the high cpu usage is always gone

Yeah this is crazy, this has definitely been only since one of the last 2 or 3 updates. I've had telegram-foss installed for over a year no issues.
Not sure if it was telegram or just telegram foss, bit the battery drain is kiling my phone, and I need to keep telegram on it.

Any official word as to whether or not this is getting worked on?

I also have Telegram FOSS drain 38% of battery, followed by Discord which is 6% but I had longer open today

hours longer in fact

My theory is that Telegram fetches messages and media in the background, including from those chats that are muted and wouldn't produce a notification anyway. And with more active groups and channels in the more battery telegram drains in the background.

Could the push notification service only listen to chats that aren't muted?

This was never the issue for me until one of the recent updates, however I +1 to that if it's not already a thing.

Unrelated but was just curious how you got top working in tmux for android processes? Is it a root only thing? @mortezadadgar

Yes "top" requires root to show all processes
