right now I only get a notification popup. If I don't see the popup (e.g. because I'm afk), I'll never notice that someone wrote a message. Other IM clients use the urgent flag as a permanent modifier.
this becomes less important as the world is swichting to wayland - and i don't know if X11-Extras has this feature. Better would be using native notifications, anyway.
I'm pretty sure that Wayland has an equivalent. I know for a fact that Windows does have one (at least when I last used it).
"Urgent flag" means that the window becomes red and starts blinking annoyingly in the task bar (or similar, depending on your OS, Window manager etc).
I believe that a call to QApplication::alert
is Qt's cross-platform way of doing this. That was _hard_ to google.
+1 So much this
In KDE I even have a shortcut to focus&raise URGENT windows, which works with pretty much everything except for Telegram :(
+1 for this request. It would be really nice, as all other desktop apps properly notify my WM that they have something to say. The only app I can't capture with that is telegram :(
+1, personally I don't think saying Wayland is a reason not to do this is a valid excuse. Wayland is nowhere near usable yet, in fact I have yet to meet someone who uses it.
This would break UX on macOS/Windows.
In fact macOS app has it and users are complaining about it.
It won't fit with Windows either.
Windows classic apps do use urgent flag (alert windows that have never been focused, or something that happened in the window that requires user attention), even Microsoft's own programs do (Explorer, Skype, you name it), it's not against the HIG at all – and apps can also make use of the progress level indicator, which I doubt Telegram has much use for (if there's an ongoing upload or download in a chat, then maybe) (also note that modern KDE has support for something similar too).
On Mac, there's no task bar to speak of, the equivalent of the urgent flag is the dock bouncing, which IIRC can be turned off. But if it cannot on a system level, the app should be amended to allow turning off bouncing.
On Windows and Linux it's perfectly fine to have a (temporarily) blinking task bar button.
Back in the old days, before UX designers decided those were outdated, applications had large config menus that allowed users to make applications behave exactly like they wanted. Glorious times, but alas lost forever. However, even today, many applications still offer hidden expert settings that aren't available through GUI means (e.g. about:config for firefox). How about offering one of those?

The problem is not resolved. I'm not the original reporter, but I still have a lot of interest in this feature being implemented.
whilst i don't feel confident in my skills in order to implement this, i also hold an interest in seeing this become a feature, i get distracted very easily.
I think I have seen the taskbar entry have a highlight on Windows lately, but I'm not sure if it always happens on new messages and whether it's Windows-only. Can someone confirm?
I believe this must be disabled by default because it causes unexpected behavior and was not listed in changelist

the setting only shows what already was enabled.
