Tachiyomi: Option to delete duplicated images (remove ads)

Created on 2 Jun 2018  Â·  7Comments  Â·  Source: tachiyomiorg/tachiyomi

Every manga chapter usually starts and finishes with ads. Most of them are pointless like looking to recruit people for already completed mangas or to fund extinct translator groups.

I think it could be done by quick hashing (MD5 or similar) the first and last 5 images of each chapter, storing the values, and comparing them to the new chapters. There could also be an option to manually mark an image as spam (so it's md5 would be manually stored and the image deleted).

Both options (automatic and manual) are also very useful for archiving purposes. Tachiyomi plans to to zip whole mangas and having clean versions without spam every few pages is a good idea.

The notion that you see it as spam, alternatively ads, is appalling to say the least. These groups have right to have that as a thanks for their effort spent translating, editing and polishing each manga, which takes a lot of time and dedication. Be thankful to the devs that this doesn't have real ads, some of the intrusive ones are bullcrap. This, what you are speaking of, is not an issue.

Groups have the right to publish the way they want. Once in my device I have the right to clean the spam.

This is not and adblock feature, their ads are still downloaded and shown but I should have the right to remove them after I've seen them. Most people do it manually for archiving purposes.

There is not a conflict of interest here. As you said Tachiyomi is free without ads, therefore it does not make any profit. Unlike websites that remove groups ads to show their own.

In any case, it's an option that could be added to Tachiyomi. You can keep it off so you will always see the same ads / spam every few pages.

I personally think that’s a lot of work for a feature that isn’t necessary. If you don’t like the pages, download the manga, delete the images and load it to your local section.

The pages you’re referring to, are NOT “ads” at all, they’re credit pages. Just like in TV shows and films, you get credits before and after the content. And as scanlation groups, for the most part, are groups of fans voluntarily making the series available in various languages, credit pages are absolutely fair. If it’s that difficult for you to swipe/tap a couple times to avoid the credits, then you should go with the local option I mentioned previously

If I agree with your point the only credit pages that should be kept are the real manga authors ones. Fortunately there are just a few of those and tastefully done and integrated with the manga.

On the other hand the "credits" by translator groups are all over the place every chapter. And they don't integrate with the manga style like the real authors' credits do. They popup like the ads / spam they are. Professionally translated mangas also credit the translators, they don't spam you every 20 pages (chapter) with 3-5 ads.

That said, I agree that the groups do a lot of hard work and we should be thankful for that, but they are not more important than the real manga authors. This debate is the the same people had over adblock stealing revenue from website creators / youtubers / etc. It's a personal choice and we should have the option to remove annoying ads / spam.

I honestly would not ask for this option if I wasn't annoyed by how the "credits" have become a lot of spam / ads every few pages. The same way adblock was the result of websites abusing ads and people being annoyed.

This has to be the worst GitHub issue I've ever seen. What's wrong with crediting people who have spend time translating the chapters? They've spend hours creating it. Just because the original author deserves more credit, doesn't mean you should take away those from other groups.

Im not speaking for any other developer but i personally won't implement this it's a waste of time for a feature that only you would use. Feel free to fork tachiyomi and add the feature yourself.
