Synfig: feature resquest: schematic or wire view

Created on 2 Mar 2019  路  2Comments  路  Source: synfig/synfig

Hello, I would like Synfig Studio to have a wire view or a contour view in the work area. Only the contours of all types of layers are visible in this mode. I think this could give a light and useful viewing option when it comes to making animations.

I hope it is useful.

Thank you.

@Jose-Moreno This is a good start!

Since this feature needs a well-thought and detailed description, I suggest to create a special page in Developer Documentation - https://synfig-docs-dev.readthedocs.io/en/latest/ (we can add a special section for projects like that).

This way, the proposal can be enhanced by several users, while discussion can be continued here. ^__^

For inspiration to developers that wants to tackle this please take a look at how professional software does it, such as:

  • Adobe Flash / Animate CC, View layer content as Outlines "mode" Video timestamp 0:52
  • Moho Pro (the closest commercial software similar to Synfig) Display Quality Options
    image
  • Blender

Ideally I think this proposal could have added some important details:

  • Not all layers are suitable for this implementation. As such the most suitable to have this behavior implemented would be:

    • Geometry Layers

    • Other > Text Layer

The rest should simply display either a mockup boundary that represents the area of the effect or distortion, OR not display anything at all, aside from their widgets (e.g Skeleton Layer)

  • I also think each geometry layer should have a color tint specifically meant to be sued with this "wireframe" mode, that way it's easier to distinguish visual groups on the canvas, instead of everything being colored black.

  • We should also have an option to isolate the participation of a drawing layer on this rendering type, but this is true as well for all rendering types. Sometimes the animators want to see everything as a wire, except the current prop or character they are working on. It should be considered to also add a base feature that allows other rendering types to be filtered, so if I want some elements to be of draft quality, and others to be of wireframe quality the animator can quickly change between these.

If I think of anything else I'll edit this comment to avoid cluttering this proposal.
