Synergy-core: Black and white icon for Mac OS X tray

The Synergy icon is the ONLY icon in my notification area that isn't black and white and drives my OCD crazy! Dropbox and Box both let me pick a colored icon or a b/w one.

Don't think this is an issue and is more of a feature request.

I could make a black and white one in photoshop but IDK if that's what the Dev's want as there's different shades of blue and green. Let me know if someone wants it.

It should be a simple coloring of the synergy.ico file under res/

But I might be wrong...

It is not a problem. However it should be considered, since it is related to the user experience and satisfaction.
Users would appreciate if there was an option to pick b&w or color. I would go even further, adding high resolution icons for retina displays.

I spent some time digging through the Synergy.app contents to see if I could override the existing icon, but looking at the source, I believe the file lives somewhere I can't touch through Finder. It looks like we need to get some a new design checked into SVN.

I mocked something up that I think would work:

Because I'm lazy and I think the icon shown when Synergy is connected should be the icon by itself (no more checkmark), I think the icon shown when Synergy is connecting should animated, akin to this:

I'd also be happy with a smooth spinning animation, or even a well-designed connecting icon overlay (like Dropbox's), but as I said, I'm lazy. The assets, simple as they may be, are Retina-sized, so I can provide .pngs of whatever is needed.

I'm not in love with the design shown above, so I welcome any and all feedback. I should be able to make time in the next couple of weeks to try out different ideas.

Just adding a comment here to remind people of the Dark Theme in Yosemite 10.10.1 (System bar is black there, so the icon need stop be white in that case).

@howellzd Priorities are important. Certainly the program crashing or consuming 100% CPU must take precedence over a style issue. What good is a nice looking icon if there's nothing functioning properly behind it?

@beporter , i think people are scratching their heads that a bug that was raised originally on Date: 2013-12-11 17:35:56, still hasn't been addressed. But yeah, you do raise valid points :D

I don't disagree with you at all-- the program _should_ look as good as it (usually) works after all, but if you hang around here long enough you're going to see TONS of minor issues getting "ignored" in favor of constant showstoppers. There are items that are close to (EDIT: 6) years old still-- don't take it personally that it's "only" been 1.5 for this one. :wink:

But seriously: A program like Synergy is about as non-trivial as they get-- triple(+) cross platform, hooks deeply into user input, requires security/encryption, near-realtime performance/networking is mandatory, must handle OS-specific APIs for clipboards, mouse movement, keys/modifiers/shortcuts, different languages/locales, background services, file transfers... yeah, I don't envy the devs at all. Give them as much money as you can afford. :+1:

We need this. Synergy is great, but it sticks out like a sore thumb in the menubar. A high-res 1024*1024 app icon wouldn't hurt either.

The current icon in OS X looks horrible and is heavily pixelated. I resorted to launching it via terminal without an icon but this is now becoming painful.

Anyone know how I can change the icon on the build and re-compile?
