Server: osx 10.11.4
Client: ubuntu 16.10
Still around on 1.8.8-stable-25a8cb2
Ubuntu 16.04
Still here in
1.8.8-stable-25a8cb2
on Ubuntu 17.04
The cursor disappears on the client side literally every other time it goes from the server to the client.
Workaround: install compiz config settings manager on the client and disable effects/animations

I take that back. Somehow it started working and I thought it was because of the effects/animations have been disabled, but now the cursor disappears again and no tweaks to effects/animations settings make any difference.
I've got same issue and client's behavior is quite erratic. cursor disappearance, cursor is bounded at certain window
