Synergy-core: Unable to drag and drop files from Windows

Although mouse and keyboard sharing works, I am unable to drag and drop files between the systems, drag and drop is enabled on the server but the file return to it's position the moment the cursor leaves the system.
Attempted both ways with image and text files, all failed with no error in the log.

It works sometimes. At first it worked on my workstations: Windows 10 Enterprise x64/Windows 8.1 Pro x64.
I've transferred simple *.png file from server(win10) to client(win 8.1) then deleted file and tried to transfer again - failed.

I experience this issue as well. Drag/Drop is enabled from _Advanced server settings_. When I try to drag file in different computer cursor stops at screen border. Log does not show any kind of activity.

This feature has never worked for me 😞

I personally cannot drag and drop between Xubuntu 16.04 and Kubuntu 16.04. In Issue 4327 i have seen quite a few people with the same remark but different OS combinations.

This topic is started to allow others to chip in and hopefully figure out what and why.

Typical for me:
I can drag the file and my cursor just stops on my screen at the edge of my server (and client), even if the flag enable drag and drop is on. The cursor does not change. In the log of synergy it doesn't show any respons to me trying to drag a file to the other side.

I tried files from my desktop as well as from krusader on both sides

I'm trying to move a file from the server to the client but it doesn't work consistently. I managed to get it to work sometimes when trying with a small php (text) file.

One of three things happens (in descending order of likelihood):

1. The Mac client recognizes the file (a "ghost" image under the cursor) but when I release it nothing happens. I don't see a UI and the file doesn't appear.

I also tried dragging from the client (OSX) to the server (WinX) but that never works and produces no log entries. Not sure if it's supposed to work...

I looked at the FAQ (since the user guide mentions nothing about drag & drop) where it says the file will be copied to the desktop. But the few times when it worked I was able to drag it to any folder in Finder.
It also mentions something about limitations when using SSL. What exactly are those?

In general there is very little current documentation. Without that it's difficult to determine the source of the problem. Some question that come to mind:

• Which directions are possible? Only server to client or client to server as well? (According to the outdated FAQ both is possible)
• Which file types can be dragged?
• Can you also drag a "folder icon" or only a "file icon"?
• Will there be a progress bar somewhere? (that would be great visual feedback)
  -- If yes, on the source or destination?
• Is there a size limit?
• What's the problem with SSL?

And BTW: You wrote "width" wrong in the log ;-)

That's unfortunate. I would love it if the drag and drop worked, but the
truth is it's a pretty unnecessary feature given file sharing is so easy
these days. I could not not work without this software, it does exactly
what I need it to do, share my keyboard and mouse between two computers
running different os's

working. it's our job as users to report it. synergy architects need to
report it as broken and they are failing to do so.

Why is the company ignoring this? It never worked from the day I purchased
in December 2016. Yet their website is still advertising the feature. That
is false advertising. I am going to start running negative reviews

This worked for me, so I figure I'll post it here. It still needs addressing by Symless but this may serve as a temp workaround in the meantime.

If Synergy is running in elevated mode, the drag and drop seems to not work at all - can anyone else here try Edit>Settings> Elevate and changing that to 'never' instead of 'as needed/always' and see if it works for you?

OK I just got the program because I liked the idea of dragging and dropping files across my four computers. Alas! Like the other users, I feel a little cheated. Here's what's happening with me.

Dropping and dragging from Mac (Capitan, server) to Mac (Sierra, client), no SSL, doesn't work... Mouse, keyboard and clipboard sharing work as expected, though. I discovered, however, that if I put the file I want to transfer onto the "sending" computer's desktop first, then drag it to the receiving computer, then the transfer works... sometimes:

• Some documents transfer successfully. But it will take between one to three attempts. Often the documents I am trying to transfer end up stuck to the very edge of the sending computer where the mouse disappears to go to the next computer. If I tried to copy a document directly from a folder to the other computer, it will be automatically copied (or moved, depending on its location) to the desktop (which drives me mad when it's moved).

• Then, other documents do not transfer "fully". What happens in this case is very weird, I only transfer "ghosts" of files: a file of the same name as the original package/folder, that is only 200 or 300 bytes. I open them in TextWrangler but I can't make any sense of them. I figured out this happens every time the copy involves a directory of some sort. By that I mean your straightforward folder, of course, but also packages: apps but also documents that are really directories in disguise, but recognized as files when the proper app is installed (Logic, GarageBand, Scrivener, and actually most files that I would like to transfer...). Basically any document for which you can show "package contents".

Did anyone else experience the same symptoms? To be honest, and reading all your messages, I really feel like we are alpha testing, which is ironic when the website claims that a "rigorous QA (quality assurance), and bug fix prioritization allows [them] to deliver a more stable solution to [their] enterprise customer". I guess I should have read the github forums before buying... boohoo ;(

Synergy on the whole works absolutely great, so I don't feel at all like I'm an alpha/beta tester.

That said, file transfer does seem to be pretty wonky, and having done very basic OS development before, I understand why file transfers can be so crazy to implement, especially across platforms.

Has there been thought to just adding a right-click "Send to" context menu kind of transfer? I know that's not completely seamless like drag-and-drop is, but it also seems like it would remove a lot of possible user interaction issues.

I'm sorry I obviously struck a nerve with my "alpha testing" comment. I shouldn't have used "we" as I can't speak for anyone else than me. But you gotta understand I (and without speaking for other people, it seems that I am not the only one) purchased a software that is supposed to drag and drop files from one computer to the other and it doesn't do that for me.

I used Teleport before and the drag and drop system worked fine. The problem was the mouse sharing system though, as it would sometimes just "hang" (especially after my Sierra upgrade) and you had to quit and reopen the software. I use four computers, I didn't want to juggle with mice or screen sharing. I also used SynergyKM and the mouse sharing feature works effortlessly--but you can't share files.

I browsed around the net and found this soft that is supposed to be stable. I didn't want to waste any more time in my workflow, I bought it. But I am sort of back to where I was before I made my purchase. Which is frustrating.

Yes, everything else works fine. I see some users think drag and drop is useless. But it happened to be the reason I bought the software.

So let me put it differently. Synergy works well, but the drag and drop feature isn't working. It is very buggy. If I had read "drag and drop (beta)", in the list of features, I wouldn't be complaining. Does that make sense?

Right-click transfer, sure, that would work. Perhaps even better, since the least I use the mouse, the happier I am. And as long as a (heavy) computer user, I don't need to spend more time trying to figure out things. I just want something that works so I can get back to work.

Today I have ran into the same issue as many of you. The drag and drop was not working for me between two windows 10 computers so I opened google, gathered information and went on trial/error run.

I am able to drag and drop files between computers now but with some rules

• Files must be on desktop also the files copy onto the second desktop, they do not copy into folder even though they are dragged and dropped over folder window, moving files from folders does not work for me
• Files should be of small size, large files resulted in crashing the server and sometimes not being to able connect with my client without stopping and starting the server manually again
• If you have files with the same name on both desktops, neither will copy (will have to test that tomorow if they dont copy at all or owerwrite the file, since no file like myfile(1).txt was created)

I think i found a solution and i think its a bug,
For people who aren't able to drag n drop files between 2 windows 10 PC's try the following:
Go to "Configure Server..." then drag both pc 1 grid up en press Ok then hit Apply.

Im able to drag and drop files without any issues after following those steps.

FWIW - When I disabled SSL, drag & drop worked for me. I'm running Win 10 Pro as the server and Windows 7 Pro as a client. I'm also able to drag in each direction.

I tested Cubuss's advice, to move the computer icons 1 grid up (in the server's configuration), with 2 win7 machines and it worked (!!!), drag'n drop now works, BUT FYI it did not work with the "elevate" setting at "always".

Go figure !?!

2) only works if the source file is on my desktop of the source machine
3) the file always drops on the desktop of the destination machine
4) my elevate mode is "as needed" on both sides.
5) I have only tried this on windows 10(server) and windows 7(client)

Simply to add to your comment... I just installed and tested on CentOS v6.x as client with win7 as server. The remote keyboard/mouse works fine, but no drag'n drop, and I have no suggestion. :( Good luck with that ;)

When I figured out the drag and drop function was obviously not working, I actually asked for a refund at [email protected] and I was refunded very promptly, no questions asked. You might wanna do that.
That being said, considering this thread, stating on the website that drag and drop works is plain wrong and it is false advertising. The amount of complaints here should really compel the synergy team to modify their claims. What I think makes things worse is the fact they won't answer any of these complaints. I believe many of us would be understanding and perhaps even supportive if we had some kind of feedback from the developers. Now it's sad to say but when people ask me what software I use to share my mouse and keyboard, I have to tell them to stay away from this product. I don't know what the equivalent of the BBB is in the U.K., but since we are all being ignored, I can only advise you to look into that direction if you're frustrated and can't obtain a refund.

Just downloaded latest paid version 1.8.8-stable-25a8cb2 and drag/drop files still DOESN'T WORK between two Windows 10 pro computers. By fiddling around with all the aforementioned gimmicks, including moving both computers up in the grid and hitting apply on both and trying different settings for "Elevate" and copying to and from the desktop, I got it to work exactly once in each direction but could never repeat it. I, too, am very disappointed because this is what I bought the paid version for.

Windows 10 x64 Pro on both computers here. I have 3 monitors with 2 on one system and one on the other. The client is single monitor on the far left. The server was dual monitor (middle and right).

Drag and drop was not working until I opened NVidia control panel and designated the middle monitor as the "primary" monitor of the server system. Previously, the right-side monitor was designated as primary (no reason for that, it just was..) and drag and drop would not work under any circumstance I tried. Maybe this idea helps someone.

My center monitor on the server IS my primary monitor, but I will play around with the layout this weekend when I get a chance and see if that changes things. I wonder if drag-drop only works from the primary monitor?

My testing environments:

Windows 10 professional for Server
MacOS 10.15.5 for Client

1/ Drag and Drop sometimes work, I mean not stable.
2/ Remember desktop to desktop
3/ file name should not have special characters
4/ Debug 1 or Infor just show you the background log information, no use for this problem.
5/ Disable SSL encryption
6/ Screen grid like left->right, top->down, doesn't matter, just the mouse direction between two servers.
7/ normally from MAC to Windows is easy to drag and drop, but from windows to MAC, sometimes show like the following:

now, I can drag and drop both from windows to MAC and from MAC to windows.
according to my error, normally is that when I drag and drop, the laptop should know the source file name and path and destination path. if you drag from windows and move to MAC , normally when mouse cross the screen border, this information easily to lost.

So, i try like this:
1/ open server at windows, open client at MAC (why I do this ? if you drag and drop too many times, the clipboard may be a mess, this like restart and synchronized.)

2/ if you drag file from mac(Client for me) and drop file at windows(server for me), it should be very easy, and the file saved to the desktop of the windows.

3/ if you drag file from windows and drop file at MAC, many many time, I am failed, because the log tell me , synergy can't find the mac file path to save the file. so , when you drag file cross the screen, pls press the "Option" key at MAC , you will find , the cursor with a green + and you will feel good . it's not like before nothing happened . you will find this time ,you drop sth.

yeah, I am working now. just for fun !!!

Drag and drop not working from Windows 10 server to Mac Big Sur client. Tried all the solutions people posted here and still nothing. Should really stop falsely advertising on the website how this function works. Planning on asking for a refund as soon as I get a USB-C adapter to be able to use my peripherals on my mac.
