Svelte: i18n of README

Created on 28 Aug 2020  Â·  3Comments  Â·  Source: sveltejs/svelte

README is only in English
For non-english speakers, this can become anywhere from a minor inconvenience to a huge problem. This ultimatively hurts the democratisation of Svelte's use. (Being a Svelte fan, I obviously want as many people to be able to use it as possible)

A Solution
An easy solution to this is to have links to different README language versions at the top of each README, like this gh repo does

I would love to contribute to the initiative
I speak English, German, French and Danish fluently, (as well as Luxembourgish) which I'd like to put to use, although some of the dev-specific terms I might need to do a bit of research for. If you approve of the idea, let me know and I'll start working on it asap. (I'd prioritise German and French since more devs speak those)

I mentioned this in https://github.com/sveltejs/svelte/pull/5371, but will include it here so that others see the discussion as well. I have two hesitations about this. The first is how do we make sure that we can keep the readme updated in all languages. The other is does it do any good for just the readme to be translated? It seems like a user doesn't speak English that this is unlikely to be enough to really help them and we'd need to translate all the docs

Hi all!

I can volunteer to translate the docs in Spanish ✌ as suggested by @nico-bachner adding a README.es-es.md file sounds good!

Agreed, there's not much use in doing this without also i18ing the docs. I'll close the issue for now
