Svelte: Commitment to project

I think you're on to a winner here! Is there a business model behind Svelte? I love the concept and would be very happy to support it through a Patreon campaign (or something similar). Do the core devs have the time to really push it forward and nurture it like Facebook does with React, or Evan You does with Vue.js (he uses Patreon)?

No business model, but it's an excellent question and something we need to take seriously over the long term. Open source funding is a complex issue that I have all sorts of conflicting thoughts about...

  • what's the correct way to distribute funds among contributors? does that include people who work on documentation, or community outreach, or ancillary projects?
  • how can you ensure that the project's priorities reflect the needs of the community at large, rather than skewing towards e.g. corporate sponsors who often have different requirements?
  • what sort of accountability and transparency is required when money gets involved?

...but the bottom line is that the OSS community does need to get better at answering these questions, and is slowly doing so. (@yyx990803 I would guess you've spent a fair amount of time thinking about these things, would welcome any insight you have! CC @thelarkinn as well, if you have time to share any tidbits about Webpack's Open Collective.)

Having said all that I think it's probably too early to open a Patreon or similar for Svelte – the reason that Evan's has been such a success is that a lot of businesses were already getting significant value out of Vue, whereas Svelte has yet to prove itself.

Speaking personally, rather than for the project as a whole, funding probably wouldn't alter my commitment to the project because I have a full time job. The good news is that that full time job is one where we'll be using Svelte on every project, meaning I have every incentive to continue working on it (and will be able to spend office hours doing so).

Is Ractice being replaced completely?

Is Ractice being replaced completely?

Yes, we're in the process of switching over, though there may be projects where Svelte doesn't yet have features we need (triples, transitions, etc). Ractive is in much better hands since I've taken a back seat though :)
