Streetcomplete: Accessibility quest for restaurants etc could be on by default

Created on 15 May 2018  Â·  5Comments  Â·  Source: westnordost/StreetComplete

Currently the wheelchair accessibility quest for places like cafés, restaurants etc is not active by default.

But just like opening times and similar, the accessibility of a place is often very easily visible from outside on the street as you can see the entrance and most often also the entire venue. It would really help accessibility mapping to make it a default quest. :)

I don't agree. The wheelchair=* tag in OSM should also specify the accessibility of the rooms inside a specific amenity. See also the wiki entry for more information: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:wheelchair
e.g. to tag it as wheelchair=limited you need to convince yourself that:

Wheelchairs have partial access (e.g some areas can be accessed and others not, areas requiring assistance by someone pushing up a steep gradient).
entry: has a step but not higher than 7 cm / 3 inch ('width of a hand')
rooms: the most important rooms are stepless

Ok, so for restaurants and cafés the main question is then if the toilets are accessible too. Because for most restaurants and cafés you can see the entrance and most of the interior very easily (including if they only have high bar tables etc), and it certainly does not take longer than noting down e.g. the opening times.

For other things like shops or markets it’s even easier since they mostly don’t even have a toilet and are on one level. You just need to check if the entrance is stepless (or limited) and the interiors are wide enough.

And interiors are exactly where? Yes, _inside_ of the building…

But seriously there is more than that for shops, because steps can of course also be inside of it. If so, one needs to check for elevators or stuff like that…

See @rugk

Ok, good points. :)
