Streetcomplete: Museum type quest

Created on 21 Feb 2018  ·  13Comments  ·  Source: westnordost/StreetComplete

General

Affected key(s) (or tags) to be modified: museum
Question asked: What type of museum is XY?

Checklist

Checklist for quest suggestions (see guidelines):

  • [ ] 🚧 To be added tag is established and has a useful purpose
  • [x] 🤔 Any answer the user can give must have an equivalent tagging (Quest should not reappear to other users when solved by one)
  • [x] 🐿️ Easily answerable by everyone from the outside but a survey is necessary > The type of museum is mostly obvious from outside (name, posters, ...)
  • [x] 💤 Not an overwhelming percentage of elements have the same answer (No spam)
  • [x] 🕓 Applies to a reasonable number of elements (Worth the effort) > See below

Quantity

Although it sounds to be a very specific quest, it'd still show up frequently in cities. I can't compute the total number of quested objects all over europe, but maybe figures from a few cities are representative:

  • Vienna: ~ 150 times
  • Berlin: ~ 200 times
  • Praha: ~ 120 times
  • Paris: ~ 230 times

Moreover, I think the quest could be implemented easily using the quest generator.

Ideas for implementation

Element selection: [tourism=museum][!museum]

Proposed GUI: a simple image selection quest

Wow, thanks! You already did nearly all the research. And, BTW, the general idea LGTM.

I think "local" might refer to local museums, who show stuff of the region, e.g. tradition (i.e. if you speak German: Brauchtum). (Also, one may edit the wiki to clarify that.) Of course it is hard to find a picture for that.

For others some things I've noticed by looking at taginfo/your pictures:

  • The "open_air" is kinda strange, as it does not really describe the type of the museum, i.e. what it shows, but just the "outer appearance". I mean a museum can be about anything of the other categories and still show that such a tag was used two times. And considering that bee thing it would not be bad. So use a more general one just showing plants/animals/…
  • the picture for nature can be confused with something special as a musuem for dinosaurs. Note that taginfo even shows
  • a "famous" (10 times used – wow the tag is generally used quite rarely) missing value, not documented in the OSM wiki, is "living_history". Makes sense, IMHO, but is likely also a mixture of "open air" and (usually) history
  • "children" and "military" are missing
  • as for a picture for history: Either use a picture of a famous event (like the storming of the Bastille), but that is hard to make in an international way, or just a general picture depicting time or so, or an old car or so
  • also for the implementation maybe make sure the pictures for "arts" and "gallery" are not too far away. I understand why there are two tags (arts can be anything and specifying this as gallery makes sense IMHO, as galleries are a common type of museum and one may even separate them from the museum genre at all), but users are otherwise likely to accidentally choose "arts" before they notice there exists a "gallery" picture.
  • whoever decided to name the bee value "apis mellifera" was kinda crazy… sorry, but what if I now make a . In the UI just name it "bee" if you really want to include it. (At least it is a quite value for that tag – strangely)

So ... I'll try to respond to all points ...

LGTM
thanks! :)

yes, I speak German :) and I think so too, but since it's about local things, there can't be any general photo...
the only thing I could imagine would be a location pin, which doesn't really fit

  • Actually most open air museums are about a similar topic (stone age, early settlements ...)

  • yeah I'll fix that

  • Okay, then I gonna add it. Generally, we should rather rely on the more realistic taginfo stats than the wiki :D

  • I think children is way too rare. And as for military ... hmm ...

  • The time picture is good

  • ok thats true I will look for a solution

  • I guess the latin name doesn't make sense, yeah. I don't really no whether to ignore it ...

While certainly very helpful, it says in the wiki that the tag is "proposed". From the wiki, it is not clear which tag of the three tags used so far should be the "winner". I think this needs to go through the normal proposal and voting process before it can be implemented here.

Oops I read over that. Then of course it has to be sidetracked.
By the way, does anyone have experiences on how such a decision works and how lobg it may take?

No, but would be interested, too.

Just joking, look here: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Proposal_process ;-)

😂
thanks

It would be nice to be able to pick more than one answer, as some museum might match different answers (for instance Science and Technology)

Is someone interested in doing that? I may write necessary code, but I am not interested in spending time on reviewing tagging and making proposals (my queue is full of other projects).

That is one of things that should be discussed during establishing tagging.

https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:museum now shows "Status: in use" now, so actually I think this is done. It has been proposed already.

It's just a list of common values as found on taginfo. No research, no proposal, and overall below 1000 elements tagged with that.

To implement this quests someone would need to create list that would be both reasonably short and allow to tag almost every museum.

Note that that it can be done by anyone, no programming is needed to do that.
