Ssr: [Feature Request] Push-To-Talk for the microphone

Created on 21 Mar 2014  路  11Comments  路  Source: MaartenBaert/ssr

I'd like to record some minecraft tournament matches, but I don't want background noise getting in the way. Mumble is the main communication program I use as that has PTT. I'd like to set a PTT for the same key as Mumble (F) to allow me to only broadcast and record what I'd like to be heard.

I don't think a noise gate would solve my problems, i.e. I might have to say something to someone in my family and I wouldn't exactly want that to be recorded (when your work PC is in the living room this happens more than you'd think).

If the only thing you're worried about is microphone noise, then PTT is a bit overkill. You can also do noise filtering after you've recorded the video. Audacity has a good noise filter. This doesn't work for live streams of course, but I already have plans to add a noise gate (a.k.a. "voice activation") to SSR itself, and that would make PTT a bit redundant.

Ah, I wasn't aware about the plans for a noise gate.
Also, thank you for taking the time to develop SSR! It really is a great program.

I would love this feature, that is at least if support for recording multiple sources of audio with Pulse is implemented first.
I like to record multiplayer games with Mumble sound on, and when my microphone is on, it makes a lot of background noise, so I would like to be able to use the same push-to-talk key for both SSR and mumble.

If you're using JACK (as currently recommended), eq10q [
http://eq10q.sourceforge.net/] has a gate which seems to be working very
well for me in tests for eliminating mic noise when I'm not speaking, and I
was even able to get the threshold such that my typing is rarely picked up
without cutting off my speaking.

Obviously that won't help the people who need PTT or a mute button to
protect against family conversations or the like, but perhaps there is a
JACK plugin for that as well?

Combining audio sources as in the documentation example for recording both
game audio and microphone with Pulse isn't sufficient to your needs?

I would also like this feature.

Is it somewhere in pulse or SSR docs? Couldn't find it in latter.

In the Pulse Audio world you can do this

pacmd set-source-mute 2 1
pacmd set-source-mute 2 0

2 is index of my microphone from pacmd list-sources 1 will mute my mic, 0 will unmute my mic. This is put in a small shell script, which toggles and is attached to a keyboard shortcut which I have attached to my 'XF86AudioPlay' (keycode 172) button - FTW

Very useful indeed. I think it should be added to some kind of manual, to make it easier to find for other people.

I would like to see this feature, not for the reason OP wants it, but for the reason @Bucky21659 wants it. I want to be able to decide when I want to record my microphone "on the fly", and often I use Mumble simultaneously, so I only want to record my mic at the same time that people in Mumble hear me.

Noise is not a problem, if I speak, there can be noise at the same time, but I don't want noise when I am not speaking. I don't want to record my voice when I do not push the push to talk key.
