Since we have a Squirrel.Mac implementation, I believe there's no reason we can't have a generic Linux implementation that works on any GNU/Linux distribution or any BSD derivative.
I simply want to voice my wish to have a working, officially supported Squirrel.Linux repository here that's constantly up to date with the rest of the repositories.
Normally I'd gladly offer my help in making that happen instead of simply asking for it, but I can see no free-time in the end of the tunnel for the short or mid-term for me.
I realize a Linux implementation would stay as a niche product due to all the package managers lying around in the GNU world, but it'd still be useful for a niche community of developers.
For example, I've started working on an MMORPG project for which I'd like to have the update mechanism unified instead of building and maintaining disto-specific packages regarding GNU/Linux clients. That's why currently I'm working over my own dumb-ass update server for both Windows and Ubuntu platforms, installing and updating the dummy client in local user-space. That's, hopefully, for testing purposes within the initial development stage. Eventually, at some point, I'd like to switch to an existing update solution such as Squirrel.
I strongly believe there'd be more developers who'll be willing to use Squirrel for similar purposes.
Cool idea, you should build it!
